Researcher behind groundbreaking concept for patient-controlled health data defends dissertation in Copenhagen.

The Swedish Research Council (VR) and Vinnova have published new information on the upcoming call for excellence clusters in groundbreaking technologies. The application will be an organisational application submitted via Prisma, and therefore an internal KI pre‑registration is required for all planned cluster proposals in which KI participates. Pre‑registration is made via the link below. Deadline now extended to Monday March 16.

The call opens on 1 April and closes on 3 June

Sophia Brismar Wendel is a new professor at the Department of Women's and Children's Health as of May 18. She has conducted research on complications during pregnancy and childbirth. Her studies have led to changed guidelines at Swedish hospitals.

Daniel Hagey will assume the position of Assistant Professor at the Department of Women's and Children's Health on 1 September 2026. His research focuses on developing novel methods to detect cancer through simple blood tests – far earlier than is possible today.

An international expert panel will visit Karolinska Institutet on 10–11 March as part of KI’s new model for research evaluation, the KI Research Assessment (KIRA). The evaluation focuses on the processes and conditions that enable high‑quality research.

Starting April 1, the payroll and HR system Primula will retrieve population registration details from the Swedish Tax Agency for KI employees. This is done to ensure that employees’ names and addresses are always correct and up to date.

AutNetKI hereby announces up to four (4) pilot project grants of SEK 100,000 each to support transdisciplinary collaborations that can generate proof-of-principle data, methods, or feasibility evidence and catalyse larger autism research projects.

The Committee for Research has reviewed the guidelines for KI‑governed research centres and decided on a simplified process for their establishment, evaluation and discontinuation. During the autumn, Karolinska Institutet participated in the Swedish Research Council’s call for new Strategic Research Areas (SFOs). This has been an extensive and engaging process, with broad mobilisation across KI. In total, we submitted eight applications, two of which had KI as the lead applicant. The applications span five of the eight strategic research areas defined in this year’s call and reflect both our scientific breadth and our long-term priorities.

On 2 March, Funmilayo Deborah Shittu successfully defended her doctoral thesis on infant and young child feeding practices in Jigawa State, northern Nigeria. Due to being in the late stages of her own pregnancy, Shittu participated remotely from Nigeria, while the examination took place at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm.

George Awungafac is a PhD student at the Department of Medicine, Solna, and conducts research on global infections. George received support from an advisor at Clinicum and was given help with data analysis during his doctoral thesis.

Victor started on February 16 and is a new finance officer in the Labmed Professional Services finance team.

In March 2026, FyFa will introduce a new meeting structure that will gather information in fewer and clearer forums. At the same time, both inclusion and dialogue at the department will be strengthened. Work is progressing after the water leak in the roof of the Banting dining hall. Scaffolding has now been built along the facade and roof work will be carried out.

An external review panel has assessed that doctoral education at Karolinska Institutet is characterised by ambition and academic excellence. The external review was initiated by the Committee for Doctoral Education.

The PREGART consortium has officially launched PREGART 2, a major continuation of the PREGART research programme, during its Annual Meeting held in Kampala from 11–13 February 2026. The project is coordinated by Karolinska Institutet under the leadership of Prof. Eleni Aklillu, bringing together partners from Uganda, Ethiopia, Sweden, and Italy to generate new scientific evidence and strengthen clinical research capacity in maternal and pediatric HIV care.

In 2026, FyFa is reviewing its scientific programme with the goal of strengthening the content of our internal seminars. The work includes both the FyFa Research Fika and the FyFa Research Seminars.

The Committee started the new year with a kick off at the Radisson Blu Waterfront on February 9th. The theme of the kick off was AI and ethics in doctoral education.

FyFa welcomes Ben Stocks as the winning candidate in FyFa’s strategic recruitment of Assistant Professor (BUL). He will strengthen the area of physiology in extreme environments and will play a key role in the development of HumanLab and ExtremeLab.

The hearings with the candidates for the positions of Dean in the areas of Higher Education, Doctoral Education and Research in the direct election to advise the president, are now over and the voting has concluded. The voter turnout was high, with 57,8 per cent of KI taking the time to cast a vote for their chosen electable candidates.

Region Stockholm and the Karolinska Institutet Research Council are announcing a call for funding to support various types of research positions: specialist training posts for physicians (research ST), clinical postdoctoral positions, clinical postdoctoral positions in caring sciences, clinical researchers, and senior clinical researchers.

Neurosurgeon and researcher Elham Rostami is back at FyFa, where she once began her career. She now combines her research into traumatic brain injuries with her clinical work and her role as director of FyFa's new HumanLab.

In January 2026, the President of Karolinska Institutet appointed Lars Holmgren as the new Integration Director for SciLifeLab at KI. In this role, Lars Holmgren will serve as chairman of the SciLifeLab Committee at KI.

Wednesday, 16 April, it is time for KI’s Sustainability Day. This year’s theme explores how what we eat connects sustainable development with human health. Employees and students are invited to a day in Campus Flemingsberg with inspirational lectures, group discussions and several award ceremonies.

Anna Sandström is Associate Professor and researcher in the research group Reproductive, Perinatal and Pediatric Epidemiology at the Department of Medicine, Solna, Karolinska Institutet and work as an Obstetrician at Karolinska University Hospital, Solna. The overarching goal of the group’s research is to increase knowledge and promote evidence-based care for women and their children during pregnancy, childbirth, and the neonatal period.

From 30 March to 17 April, a new round of the employee survey will be conducted to provide an update on our workplace environment.
