Ben Stocks is currently an Assistant Professor at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research at the University of Copenhagen, and has been appointed as a tenure-track Assistant Professor (BUL) and Group Leader at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology (FyFa). Ben Stocks’ research integrates advanced proteomic and multi-omic technologies with human physiology, animal models, and cellular systems to define molecular mechanisms underlying exercise adaptation and metabolic disease, and translate these into actionable strategies to improve human health.

“We are happy to welcome Ben Stocks who will strengthen FyFa’s expertise in this area. With Ben’s enthusiasm and deep knowledge in integrative OMICS approaches, we will be able to complement ongoing efforts to understand adaptive human physiology on a molecular level, making him a truly valuable addition as we launch both HumanLab and ExtremeLab. He will be an important player in the work ahead,” says Head of Department Sophie Erhardt.

Ben Stocks has been recognised as a future research leader, with awards such as the Rising Star Fellowship from the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes.

“I am extremely honoured to be joining FyFa at Karolinska Institutet; a research setting that leads the way in clinical and translational medical research. I am particularly excited to capitalise on the strategic investment in the HumanLab and the ExtremeLab within FyFa. These facilities will allow me to drive my research programme into new frontiers of human molecular physiology,” says Ben Stocks.

A strategic recruitment for FyFa and KI

After integrating the environmental physiology research group from KTH in September 2024, FyFa took the next strategic step in strengthening the Department’s research on human environmental physiology in extreme environments by recruiting a new Assistant Professor (BUL). This position is part of KI’s broader initiative to hire 20 high‑potential early‑career Assistant Professors across multiple disciplines. A total of 64 applications were received. After careful review and digital interviews with the recruitment committee at FyFa, three final candidates were selected for interviews on site at FyFa. Among those, Ben Stocks was selected as the winning candidate.
