The Committee started the new year with a kick off at the Radisson Blu Waterfront on February 9th. The theme of the kick off was AI and ethics in doctoral education.

Cecilia Martinsson Björkdahl, Head of the Compliance and Data Office held an interesting lecture about ethics in research, research integrity, and the use of personal data in research.

Ingeborg van der Ploeg, docent och central studierektor vid KI, at KI, informed of  the use of generative AI when writing academic texts, and of Good Research Practice 2024 - Swedish Research Council in doctoral education.

The kick off was concluded by Dr. Anders Hansen, psychiatrist and author, who talked about his book the Screen Brain. While scrolling through social media, checking news updates, or streaming entertainment may feel effortless, the human brain is not designed for continuous stimulation and information overload. Over time, this mismatch between our biology and the demands of contemporary society can have serious consequences for mental well-being.

Committee of Doctoral Education (FoUK)

Each department at Karolinska Institutet  has a Committee of Doctoral Education (FoUK) responsible for matters related to doctoral education. At NVS, each division is represented by one ordinary member and one or two deputy members. The Committee also includes two representatives from the doctoral council, who contribute particularly to matters concerning the doctoral education environment. Their perspectives are essential, and the work carried out by all members is highly valued.

Admission to doctoral education begins with the establishment of a doctoral position. The research project is reviewed in an establishment meeting together with the proposed main supervisor. The Committee considers:

  • The scientific quality, originality, and feasibility of the research project
  • The competence and suitability of the supervisory team in relation to the project
  • The doctoral education and research environment
  • The role, conditions, and support of the doctoral student

The Committee convenes four establishment meetings per semester. In addition, it meets twice per semester to address current issues, share experiences, and plan its ongoing committee work. Through these meetings, the board plays a central role in maintaining the high quality and integrity of doctoral education.
