Welcome Maryam Bergstrand, new lecturer/senior dentist at the Division of Orthodontics

On the 14th of January 2026, Maryam began her employment as lecturer/senior dentist at the Department of Dental Medicine, the Division of Orthodontics. Read the interview with her here.
What is your assignment? What will you be working with?
My assignment combines the best of two worlds – clinical and academic work. As a lecturer and senior consultant, I will be teaching undergraduate students and tutoring dentists during their specialist training to become orthodontists. In addition to my teaching tasks at the Department of Dental Medicine, I will be working as an orthodontist and, in the long term, I will also be dedicating myself to some research activities.
What are you looking forward to working here most?
I am delighted to be involved in education and teaching again. Karolinska Institutet offers a workplace that allows for varied tasks and personal development. I am looking forward to working at full capacity and advancing my knowledge, while hopefully inspiring others to develop within our field.
Where are you coming from and what have you done previously?
Most recently, I come from the private sector, where I worked primarily with aligner treatments as an orthodontic specialist for the Smile Group at a clinic in central Stockholm.
Prior to that, I worked in the CLP (cleft-lip-palate) team at the Uppsala University Hospital, and I have worked for several years as an orthodontist (in both Stockholm and Uppsala).
What do you do when you're not working?
I value quality time with family and friends. My husband and I enjoy travelling and attending social events, which we try to continue doing as much as possible with our one-year-old daughter. Visiting museums, hiking, reading and exercising (yoga and swimming) are activities I enjoy in my free time.
