International expert panel for research evaluation visits KI

An international expert panel will visit Karolinska Institutet on 10–11 March as part of KI’s new model for research evaluation, the KI Research Assessment (KIRA). The evaluation focuses on the processes and conditions that enable high‑quality research.

According to national quality requirements, Swedish higher education institutions must conduct regular assessments of their research, approximately every six to eight years. KIRA is KI’s new model for this recurring research evaluation, with its first implementation taking place in 2025–2027. The model has been developed by the Committee for Research (KF).

KIRA 2025–2027 is developmental in orientation and focuses primarily on the processes and conditions that generate high-quality research. The aim is to strengthen research environments and to establish long-term working practices that promote excellent research.

Leading researchers

Support for the work is provided by an expert panel composed of internationally leading researchers and individuals with extensive experience in academic leadership. The panel is chaired by Professor Sarah Teichmann from the University of Cambridge, with Professor Thomas P. Sakmar from Rockefeller University serving as vice chair. Other panel members come from institutions including Utrecht University, the University of Oxford, the Broad Institute, the University of Copenhagen, and the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research.

During their two‑day visit in March, the expert panel will meet with KI’s management and representatives from the departments in the Solna and South departmental groups — on 10 March in Solna and on 11 March in Flemingsberg. The departments in the North group are scheduled to undergo the same process later in 2026 and 2027.
