The course Pedagogy for doctoral supervisors is currently underway, offering KI supervisors a deeper understanding of learning processes and supervisory pedagogy. Through theory, reflection and peer exchange, participants strengthen their ability to support doctoral students’ development into independent researchers.

The My Media and Media Gallery features in Canvas, which use Kaltura to store video and audio in your Canvas courses, will be discontinued. Starting 8 December, it will no longer be possible to upload new videos to My Media and Media Gallery. You will still be able to view your videos via My Media and Media Gallery in your Canvas course. To continue working with educational videos and audio files in Canvas, please use Canvas Studio going forward.

1,000 written exams – that is how many were coordinated by the Examination service in KI's shared examination halls in 2025.

Karolinska Institutet has updated its guidelines for applying for docent. The new guidelines and instructions for appointment as a docent will come into effect on 1 November.

A new strategy for student recruitment will help more prospective students discover KI and receive support in finding the programme that suits them best. The strategy sets out the direction and process for the work going forward.

On 1 October, over 200 dedicated employees from Karolinska Institutet and Region Stockholm gathered for this year's Educators' Day at the Flemingsberg campus. The participants came from different parts of the organisation with teaching assignments or involvement in educational issues, and the day offered lectures, workshops, discussions and networking.

Over 70 employees and students from Karolinska Institutet participated in this year's international conference for health and medical education, AMEE 2025, which was held in Barcelona. The conference brought together over 4,000 participants from around the world and offered both future outlooks and important discussions on the role of education in a rapidly changing healthcare.

At the Teaching and Learning Unit, several educational developers work in different areas to support teachers and supervisors in their teaching. One of them is Helena Brodin, who contributes to creating the conditions for high-quality supervision of students who are doing work-based practice in healthcare.

The committee for higher education has decided to award Anders Sondén and Anna Pettersson KI's Pedagogical Prize in 2025.

The teaching and learning unit is launching a new network within Karolinska Institutet for educators called HEarts – Health Education Arts. The overall idea is to explore how arts and humanities can be integrated into our curricula to enhance teaching and learning.

The application process for the fourth KIPRIME Fellows Initiative is now open for participants from Karolinska Institutet and other Swedish universities. This unique initiative, co-financed by the Gunnar Höglund and Anna-Stina Malmborg Foundation and KI, aims to nourish the next generation of Karolinska Institutet Prize for Research in Medical Education winners by offering an inspirational curriculum of mentoring and development activities for outstanding midcareer medical education researchers.

Riitta Möller is awarded the prize for her great commitment to students and pedagogical development.

For ICT educator Marcus Emas, Microsoft Copilot (formerly Bing Chat Enterprise) and AI offer new opportunities to streamline the work with reference management, reading lists and assessing assignments, among other things. He emphasizes that AI at KI should be an equal tool and welcomes the introduction of Microsoft Copilot.

This year's KLOK award goes to the Optometry program, which together with the St. Erik Eye Hospital has developed a clinical training clinic where students from several educational programs can broaden and deepen their knowledge in an interprofessional learning environment.

On August 31, 80 new master's students from 23 different countries were welcomed to the Department of Global Public Health at Karolinska Institutet. During a welcome day, they got to know their new department, received tips on the use of AI tools, answered a quiz from Gapminder, and got to know fellow new students. In addition, they were treated to a lecture by former state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell on the topic "Is the pandemic over?"

Terese Stenfors and Lena Engqvist Boman are awarded the 2023 prize in recognition of their many years of contribution to excellent educational leadership in KI's educational activities. The prize will be officially awarded at KI’s installation ceremony, which is to be held in Aula Medica in October 2023.

KI is launching a new podcast: The PAPERs podcast. Every week you will drop into the conversation between four hosts who discuss articles addressing health professions education. While the content is rigorous, the hosts offer accessible insights with lighthearted style, making this podcast regular listening for many scholars’.

What does continuous learning mean to us, and what can it look like in practice? These questions were the focus for the 170 participants who participated in the two day Educational Congress. The congress was permeated by meetings, inspiration and exchange of knowledge and experiences in the field. Among the activities at the congress, KI's pedagogical policy was launched.

Björn Meister at the Department of Neuroscience is awarded the 2022 prize for his long-standing commitment to teaching at several of Karolinska Institutet's educational programmes.

For the first time, Swedish higher education institutions have conducted a joint national survey on the prevalence of gender-based and sexual harassment in the academic sector. The responses from a total of almost 39,000 employees and students show that young people, women and students (including doctoral students) are particularly at risk.

Virtual lab training can cater for different types of learning abilities among students and offer a variety of techniques that might not be possible to teach/learn during an on-campus course. On 14 October 2021, the annual inauguration ceremony was held in Aula Medica where 18 new professors were installed, and 12 adjunct professors and 2 visiting professors were welcomed to their new positions at the university.

On 29 May, the government announced that as of 15 June, higher education institutions may return to campus-based teaching. The recommendations issued by the Swedish Public Health Agency for containing the spread of the virus apply as much to HEIs as they do to general society, and require a responsible approach to the planning of a return to campus-based teaching.

The pandemic has meant that courses and programmes have only had a short time to transition to distance teaching – something which has required major involvement from teachers, students and educational administrators. At the same time, these experiences have propelled the development of teaching methods.

Since 15 June, the requirements for distance learning have been eased and this autumn there will be a gradual return to KI's campus. But the unusual spring semester has yielded valuable lessons and experiences. Head of Division Ann Langius-Eklöf and lecturer Carina Georg recount what it was like for the nursing education programmes – to work against the clock.

On 17 March 2020, the Public Health Agency of Sweden encourages Swedish universities and upper-secondary schools to conduct distance learning in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The campus closes on 18 March, but teaching must continue. For KI’s teachers, it’s the start of an intensive undertaking, one that proved particularly challenging for the Unit for Teaching and Learning.

In order for students to continue their education, Karolinska Institutet (KI) has decided to make it possible to, during the summer, provide courses and activities that due to the prevailing pandemic could not be completed during the spring term.

In order to simplify planning for both teachers and students, the Committee for Higher Education has decided that teaching at the basic and advanced levels will take place via distance for the remainder of the spring term.

We are now initiating the recruitment of seven new professors in a strategic effort to reinforce the educational development of our programmes and to improve the conditions for a close collaboration between research and education.

More than 700 students from KI’s study programmes took part in IPL Day on 22 October. This day is one feature of KI’s action plan for interprofessional learning.

Mushroom pickers and kite surfers who want to cure cancer and eliminate chronic pain – those are some of the 13 new professors inaugurated at Karolinska Institutet on Thursday in a ceremony in Aula Medica. Some 750 guests had gathered to welcome the new professors in addition to eight adjunct professors, four visiting professors, eight prize winners and four medalists.

This year’s KLOK Award goes to Danderyd’s Academic Care Centre for their exemplary well-organised student work.

The integration of the UN’s Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals into higher education and the importance of engaging students in the process were in focus at the recent conference, “Rethinking Higher Education: Inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals”.
