KI has been approved continued funding from the Swedish Institute (SI) to implement two capacity building training programmes for professionals in Sub-Saharan Africa. The programmes, which have been running since 2020, will be offered online during 2022 - 2023.

We are looking for students to work at the welcome ceremony for new students starting fall semester of 2022. The ceremony is on August 25 in Aula Medica. And yes, since the ceremony is in August you will have to be a student at KI also next semester. There are two different types of jobs available, read more about them below.

Six people, members of staff or affiliated, from KI went to Moldova on short notice to support the healthcare system there by conducting mass casualty exercises and training in triage and treatment of war wounds. The work was done through KI’s Centre for Health Crises, on a request from the WHO.

The Centre for Health Crises at Karolinska Institutet is now a member of the WHO’s network GOARN – Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network. Via the network, the Centre for Health Crises can contribute with staff and resources to health emergencies and crises around the world.

Allan Bakesiga and Linda Atulinda are medical students at Makerere University in Uganda. They are currently doing an exchange at Karolinska Institutet through a collaboration between the two universities. It is one of the most comprehensive international collaborations at KI which has enabled students, researchers, and professors to do exchanges both ways for many years.

Several researchers at KI have offered to host Ukrainian colleagues. Initiatives have been launched through, among others, the organisation EMBO, which supports research and researchers in the field of life science.

The EU-funded research network Vaccelerate has now opened a European volunteer-registry of study participants for research on COVID-19 vaccines. The aim of this initiative is to boost the capacity for clinical studies on COVID-19 vaccines in the EU, but also to support vaccine research in future pandemics.

KI researcher Lu Yi has been awarded 1.5 million euros from the prestigious European Research Council Starting Grants. The funds will go toward research on different subtypes of depression with the goal of finding treatments that work for more people.

Three research group leaders at Karolinska Institutet receive European Research Council Proof of Concept (ERC PoC) 2022 grants, which are awarded to researchers who already have funding from the ERC and now wish to develop the innovative potential of their discoveries. On Thursday 16 September the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health (CESH) was inaugurated. It's a digital competence center that has been established together with Makerere University in Uganda. Karolinska Institutet has together with its partners in Sub-Saharan Africa kick-started implementation of a new online training programme about sustainable health for professionals in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Somalia and Uganda. A year has passed now since Karolinska Institutet, the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and Stockholm University formed the university alliance Stockholm trio. Together, the three academic institutions seek to develop and promote the international research and education environment of the Stockholm region, and will establish a joint office in Brussels. Veteran of the EU scene, Dan Andrée is now laying the foundations of the office.

The first virtual workshop between the Stockholm Trio (KI, KTH and SU) and the University of Tokyo was conducted September 16th-18th, via Zoom. Researchers at Karolinska Institutet are taking part in three projects funded as part of the EU’s second major investment in research on the new coronavirus sars-cov-2, COVID-19 and the pandemic. The total research grant for KI amounts to just over SEK 14 million.

Three researchers at Karolinska Institutet have been awarded the 2020 ERC Starting Grant: Niklas Björkström, Janina Seubert and Nils Landegren. Their projects concern resident organ-specific immune cells, the cognitive mechanisms behind our preference of certain foods, and sex-differences in the human immune system and the risk of autoimmune disease. In all, the European Research Council will support 436 early-career researchers with this prestigious grant.

Karolinska Institutet has been awarded funding from the Swedish Insitute for two training programmes amounting to a total of four million SEK within the framework of the Swedish Institute’s Public Sector Innovation Programme. The programmes will run 2020-2021.

An international network of researchers in 10 countries are to study the effectiveness of homeschooling during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The gathering of data via online surveys in the various languages is being led by researchers at Karolinska Institutet. The aims of the study are to look at the challenges facing families during the COVID-19 pandemic and to produce recommendations and technical methods for both homeschooling and teaching in general.

The EU-funded cooperation project "Modernity, Education and Human Rights" (MEHR), between Sweden, Croatia and Portugal, aimed at developing the work and strengthening higher education on human rights within the fields of medicine, social welfare, teacher training, geography and engineering.

When Nobel prize winner Michael Kremer initially looked at the data of his now famous 1990s Kenya school study, he felt shocked and disappointed. The data showed that more textbooks did nothing to improve educational outcomes, contrary to what most researchers believed. But rather than succumbing to disillusionment, Kremer dug deeper into Kenya’s schooling system to uncover what measures truly did make an impact and found his answer: targeted help for weak students.

KI's internationalisation work was presented at the Internationalisation Days in Gothenburg November 5-6.

In October 2019 a delegation from Karolinska Institutet visited China to recruit scholars.

For the eight year in a row, Karolinska Institutet’s Global Master’s Scholarship has been awarded to Master’s students from outside Europe.

Altogether SEK 170 million. This is this year's allocation from the European Commission under the funding programme for health in Horizon2020. Stanford Medicine X has launched a new self-paced online course through Stanford online with faculty from Stanford University.
