Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have studied the incidence and regional distribution of Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers in the brains of people with Down’s syndrome. The results can bring new possibilities for earlier diagnosis and preventive treatment of dementia. The study is published in Molecular Neurodegeneration.

Hi Hazal Haytural, PhD student at the Division of Neurogeriatrics, NVS! On November 27 you will defend your thesis “Unraveling pathogenic proteins and pathways in Alzheimer disease: A focus on proteomics”. What’s the main focus of the thesis?

Dr. Ivan Nalvarte, a Senior Researcher at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition (BioNut) at Karolinska Institutet, has been awarded a grant of approximately 1.75 million US dollars for four years, from the National Institute of Health (NIH), USA.

World-Wide FINGERS (WW-FINGERS) is the first global network of clinical trials for risk reduction and prevention of dementia and Alzheimer's disease through multidomain interventions. The network convenes research teams from over 30 countries, and is led by Professor Miia Kivipelto from the Center for Alzheimer Research, Karolinska Institutet. The main scope, scientific strategy and activities of the WW-FINGERS network have been published today (July 6, 2020) in Alzheimer's & Dementia.

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have imaged tau protein in the brains of living patients with Alzheimer’s disease. The amount and spread of tau proved a predictor of future memory loss. Brain imaging for measuring tau can be useful both for improving diagnosis and for developing more effective treatments, say the researchers. The study is published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry.

She receives the grant for ”New diagnostic tools and treatment for Alzheimer's disease, traumatic brain injury and small vascular disease” and it is distributed over three years.

Per Nilsson, at the Division of Neurogeriatrics, NVS, receives 1 000 000 SEK in grants from Torsten Söderberg's Foundation.

New research from Stockholm University and Karolinska Institutet shows that viruses interact with proteins in the biological fluids of their host which results in a layer of proteins on the viral surface. This coat of proteins makes the virus more infectious and facilitates the formation of plaques characteristic of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. The study is published in Nature Communications.

Professor Miia Kivipelto and her team - the Nordic Brain Network - provided a major contribution to the development and definition of the guidelines, given the expertise and experience in the field of risk and protective factors for dementia and AD.

Researchers from Karolinska Institutet and KTH Royal Institute of Technology have developed a new cell model for human brain helper cells known as astrocytes. The model could potentially be used in large-scale drug screening in the search for treatments for neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s. The research is published in the scientific journal Stem Cell Reports.
