A new film presenting Karolinska Institutet has now become a reality. The film showcases both the breadth and excellence of KI’s education and research and can be used in seminars and conferences, as well as in other contexts where staff and students want to give an overall presentation of KI.

More places will be available this year for the eAT exam, which is a prerequisite for applying for registration as a foundation doctor. In previous years, not all applicants in different parts of the country have been able to sit the exam. Now, the exam will be held in two cities – Malmö and Stockholm – and on a new day of the week.

On Wednesday 25 March, Karolinska Institutet opened the doors of Zanderska huset for this year’s Open Day. Interest was high, and there was a steady flow of visitors keen to ask questions to students from KI’s undergraduate programmes.

On Thursday, 26 March, the Police Authority will carry out a major training exercise in and around Tomtebodaskolan. The exercise will include several components and will also involve role-players acting as pupils in a school environment.

The application for Minor Field Studies (MFS) for the autumn semester of 2026 is now open. The scholarship provides students with the opportunity to conduct a field study in a low- or middle-income country as part of their degree project. The application deadline is 17 April, 2026.

The President has now decided who will become KI’s new deans and deputy deans for higher education, doctoral education and research from 1 July 2026 to 31 December 2029, when their term of office expires.

Nominations are now open for positions as faculty members on the Faculty Board and committees for Higher Education; Doctoral Education; and Research. By nominating a colleague or teacher, you contribute to strong, representative and committed academic leadership for KI's education and research.

Since May 2025, Alexandra Kambler and Ingrid Öberg have been working as student and doctoral ombudspersons at the Medical Students’ Association. Their role is to make it easier for KI students to access support in time, prevent problems from escalating, and contribute to clearer and safer processes throughout their studies.

The application period is now open for both the KI Global Master’s Scholarship and the KI‑DIS Fellowship. These merit-based scholarships cover the full tuition fee for students admitted to one of Karolinska Institutet’s global master’s programmes.

To take an exam, you must be able to verify your identity. E‑ID cards, service ID cards and national ID cards (from countries within the EU, EEA or Schengen) are now also accepted as valid forms of identification.

You can now watch the recordings from the hearings on 4 February, where the candidates for the positions of dean for higher education, doctoral education and research presented their ideas for leading KI forward. If you are eligible to vote, use your opportunity to influence and vote by 11 February.

On Friday 23 January, KI welcomed the new students of this semester. During the day, they took part in a ceremony featuring a speech from the President, an engaging student panel, a performance by the student union and inspiring research insights – followed by a fair where they could meet different parts of KI.

Who will lead KI's education and research in the coming years? The candidates are presented and the election process is underway. Through hearings and voting, you as an employee can have a say.

This spring, KI will begin replacing access cards (KI cards) and implementing a new system for managing access to premises – for a safer campus for both staff and students. The Professional Services (GVS) will be the first to replace cards, followed by the departments.

On Friday 16 January, newly graduated occupational therapists, physiotherapists, medical doctors and nurses were celebrated during this year’s graduation ceremonies in Aula Medica, together with their families and friends. A digital system for parking permits and payment is to be introduced on both KI campuses on 1 January 2026. Parking spaces are to be provided by Akademiska Hus, whose contract with Smart Parkering will commence on that date.

On 25 November, the eleven master's students who were awarded KI scholarships for the global master's programmes were celebrated at a ceremony in Aula Medica. KI's president Annika Östman Wernerson gave a speech, and the programme managers also took part in the ceremony.

Last Friday, KI celebrated one of the highpoints of the year as it awarded degrees to 19 jubilee doctors and 147 new doctoral graduates. The evening of 14 November in the Stockholm City Hall turned into a moving tribute to research advances from different perspectives – one such being gender equality: 50 years ago, barely 3 per cent of the new doctors were women; this evening it was 58 per cent.

The academic election process for 2026 has now begun. If you work or study at KI, you will be able to nominate candidates for the positions of dean and deputy dean (corresponding to the current academic vice president) between 17 November and 7 December. With this year's ranking of 8th, up from 42nd last year, KI is now at the very top alongside employers such as Ikea, Google and Spotify.

Restaurant Jöns Jacob will be closed for renovations during the autumn semester of 2025. During this period, the microwave area (Mikrotorget) has been temporarily relocated to the entrance hall of the BZ building at Berzelius väg 3, in the former premises of the Medical Bookstore.

The stage in Erling Persson Hall was brightly decorated with balloons and flowers as around 400 master’s students gathered to take part in the ceremony on 29 August. Hosts Gottfrid Rehnman and Gabriela Kazmierczak guided the audience through the programme with warmth, humour, and anecdotes from their own time as KI students.

KI University Library has developed a new digital resource with advice and recommendations on how generative AI tools can be used effectively and responsibly in studies.

In a pilot project within the course Biomedical Communication, students have tackled the complex issue of antibiotic resistance (AMR) through gamification. When the AMR Knowledge Space Game was integrated into the curriculum, the response from both teachers and students was overwhelmingly positive. With the success of the pilot, the interactive game may become part of future courses and educational research at Karolinska Institutet (KI).

At the Teaching and Learning Unit, several educational developers work in different areas to support teachers and supervisors in their teaching.
