We are looking for students who would like to take part in an interview about the time before starting their studies and during their first semester at KI.

When this year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was announced on 5 October, KI students came together to watch the exciting moment unfold. Refreshments were served as the live broadcast was shown on a big screen.

On 24 September, all students who started either term 1 of a programme or a master's programme at KI in autumn 2026 will receive the new student experience survey by email. By taking part, you will help KI better understand how new students experience their first weeks of study.

Ahead of the autumn term 2026, KI’s new students were welcomed with a week filled with inspiration, community and engagement. As early as the week before the start of term, new students had the opportunity to get to know both KI and each other through lectures, activities and meetings with different parts of student life.

Karolinska Institutet has adopted a new strategy for gender equality and equal opportunities for the period 2026–2030. The strategy is an important part of KI’s work to create an inclusive study and working environment where all students and staff have equal opportunities to develop, contribute and build their careers.

With the support of a Minor Field Studies (MFS) grant, master's student in Public health Nabilah Amalina Rozi travelled to Indonesia to explore how young people perceive mental health and the support they need. Her study highlights the importance of involving youth in conversations and decisions that affect their lives.

Master’s students can apply for a SASUF+ stipend of SEK 30,000 to support thesis-related fieldwork or data collection in South Africa. The programme strengthens research collaboration between Sweden and South Africa. Apply by 15 October 2026.

The rapid advancement of AI in medical research is increasing the need for coordination. Karolinska Institutet is therefore funding a cross-institutional AI network that brings together researchers, clinicians and experts, coordinates initiatives, and provides support for reliable and clinically relevant AI.

According to the Swedish National Union of Students (SFS), all students need to be given the right tools to tackle sustainability issues in their future professional lives; sustainability must not be allowed to become an issue confined to certain subject areas. But students also want higher education institutions to practise what they preach. Among other things, a balance is needed between climate action and mobility, where digital communication and efficient transport can reduce emissions.

When Gottfrid Rehnman and his fellow students from the 5.5‑year medical programme enter working life, they will first begin their general medical internship. “The learning curve is likely to be steep,” he says.

On 5 June, the last group of students graduated from the 5.5-year Study Programme in Medicine, which had been in place for half a century. However, many of the educational advances developed within the programme live on in the new 6-year Study Programme in Medicine, including the student-run teaching wards.

Over two ceremonial and joyful days, KI celebrated students who completed their bachelor's and master's degree programmes. Family members, friends, teachers and students gathered in Aula Medica to mark graduation – an important milestone and the beginning of a new chapter in life.

Renovation work is now underway to create a new room for examinations and computer-based teaching at the Solna campus. It will meet the need for both an exam hall and computer-based teaching.

At the end of last week, Karolinska Institutet took part in Järvaveckan, an annual event focused on dialogue and societal issues. Each year, political parties, public authorities, companies, organisations, universities, and schools come together to meet the public, discuss current topics, and build new connections.

Paolo Ceriani has always been interested in science, but when his mother was diagnosed with cancer, that interest took a new direction. He wanted to understand the disease on a deeper level and later began studying Biomedicine at Karolinska Institutet. Before moving to Sweden, he had only visited the country once – on a road trip from Italy through northern Sweden.

From 11–13 May, Karolinska Institutet hosted two major meetings within the European university alliance NeurotechEU. Hundreds of participants from across Europe gathered in Stockholm to discuss the future of education, research and innovation in neuroscience and neurotechnology.

The Swedish government has decided to introduce changes to the current migration legislation that will affect students holding a residence permit for studies. These changes are scheduled to take effect on 11 June 2026.

The committee for higher education has decided to award Nicola Orsini and Karin Garming Legert KI's Pedagogical Prize in 2026.
The prize is awarded during the inauguration ceremony in Aula Medica in October.

From Thursday 14 May, a new entrance to Campus Solna will open for pedestrians and cyclists. The new entrance is located at the junction of Solnavägen and Nobels väg. The current entrance to the campus, at the corner of Solnavägen and the access road to the E4/Essingeleden, will be closing shortly.

After completing a bachelor’s degree in economics, Philip Lindersten realised he was more interested in people than in markets. Today, he is studying on the psychology programme at KI, where the encounter between research and real-life experiences became decisive for his choice.

Problems with Tortalk as a pedagogical accommodations for students with disabilities during digital exams have been noticed lately. Now there is a temporary solution that can be used by students during a digital exam.

The sun glittered over Stockholm City Hall and the waters of Lake Mälaren as 143 doctoral graduates and two honorary doctors were conferred in the Blue Hall on Friday 24 April. During the ceremony, they received their hats and were celebrated with strings, singing and a cannon salute, before the festivities continued with a banquet in the Golden Hall.

Karolinska Institutet Innovation is now being launched, offering staff and students support in testing their ideas. The ultimate aim is to ensure research is converted into innovations that serve the public and patients’ best interests.

Credit transfers at first- and second-cycle level are now managed in Ladok. This means that the entire process – from application to decision – is handled directly within the system.

Professor Brian Hodges, already a familiar face at KI, has in recent years explored the potential influence of AI on medical education and assessment methods for students. In his new role as a visiting professor, he will contribute to a strategic initiative aimed at advancing the field of medical education research at KI.

A new film presenting Karolinska Institutet has now become a reality. The film showcases both the breadth and excellence of KI’s education and research and can be used in seminars and conferences, as well as in other contexts where staff and students want to give an overall presentation of KI.

More places will be available this year for the eAT exam, which is a prerequisite for applying for registration as a foundation doctor. In previous years, not all applicants in different parts of the country have been able to sit the exam. Now, the exam will be held in two cities – Malmö and Stockholm – and on a new day of the week.

Are you studying medicine, biomedicine, or life sciences at KI and curious about the future of brain research?

The application for Minor Field Studies (MFS) for the spring semester of 2027 is now open. The scholarship provides students with the opportunity to conduct a field study in a low- or middle-income country as part of their degree project. The application deadline is 29 October, 2026.

The President has now decided who will become KI’s new deans and deputy deans for higher education, doctoral education and research from 1 July 2026 to 31 December 2029, when their term of office expires.

Ahead of the spring term, two new presidents have taken over at KI’s student unions: Medicinska Föreningen (MF) and Odontologiska Föreningen (OF). Meet Linnea Ammer Jansson and Alexander Suei and learn about their priorities, motivations, and what they hope to achieve this year.

Nominations are now open for positions as faculty members on the Faculty Board and committees for Higher Education; Doctoral Education; and Research. By nominating a colleague or teacher, you contribute to strong, representative and committed academic leadership for KI's education and research.

Since May 2025, Alexandra Kambler and Ingrid Öberg have been working as student and doctoral ombudspersons at the Medical Students’ Association. Their role is to make it easier for KI students to access support in time, prevent problems from escalating, and contribute to clearer and safer processes throughout their studies.

The application period is now open for both the KI Global Master’s Scholarship and the KI‑DIS Fellowship. These merit-based scholarships cover the full tuition fee for students admitted to one of Karolinska Institutet’s global master’s programmes.

To take an exam, you must be able to verify your identity. E‑ID cards, service ID cards and national ID cards (from countries within the EU, EEA or Schengen) are now also accepted as valid forms of identification.

As of 2025, the Hagströmer Medical History Library is officially an integrated part of Karolinska Institutet University Library (KIB), with exciting plans to move to Campus Solna.

On Friday 23 January, KI welcomed the new students of this semester. During the day, they took part in a ceremony featuring a speech from the President, an engaging student panel, a performance by the student union and inspiring research insights – followed by a fair where they could meet different parts of KI.

Who will lead KI's education and research in the coming years? The candidates are presented and the election process is underway. Through hearings and voting, you as an employee can have a say.

This spring, KI will begin replacing access cards (KI cards) and implementing a new system for managing access to premises – for a safer campus for both staff and students. The Professional Services (GVS) will be the first to replace cards, followed by the departments.

On Friday 16 January, newly graduated occupational therapists, physiotherapists, medical doctors and nurses were celebrated during this year’s graduation ceremonies in Aula Medica, together with their families and friends. It marked the end of many semesters of hard work – and a day that all in attendance will remember.
