Meet the new student union presidents Patrik Blomberg and Ibrahim Topal
Patrik Blomberg and Ibrahim Topal are the newly appointed presidents of Medicinska Föreningen (Medical Association) and Odontologiska Föreningen (Dental Association). Both have previous experience in student union work.
"I’ve been active in OF for two or three years, as the president of the International Committee, where I worked a lot to engage exchange students in the union," says Ibrahim Topal, dental student in eighth semester.
"I was involved in student life while studying at KTH, and here at KI, I’ve participated in many fun events organized by the nursing section," says Patrik Blomberg, nursing student in his fourth semester, but taking a break from studies during his year as president.
What do you think the student unions’ most important tasks are?
"Creating a good sense of community and making sure members have fun during their studies. We also want them to grow by trying something new, meeting new people, or getting involved in the union," says Patrik Blomberg.
"Yes, community is key, and providing a natural meeting place during the student years is important, especially for students from other cities. I’m from Gävle myself, and I know how important the reception and activities of the union have been for me," says Ibrahim Topal.
What will you focus on in 2025?
"We will organize several big events where we hope to see lots of people and great vibes. The next one is our Valentine's Day event on February 21. We are also focusing on sports activities, like football, where we have OF's Korpen team 'Käftis'. This year, OF is also hosting the Odontological Games – a three-day event where dental associations from all over the Nordic countries compete in various sports," says Ibrahim Topal.
"We will also have several large events and are planning for MF’s 150th anniversary in 2027. The planning is already underway for a three-day celebration and several events throughout the year. We’re also putting effort into improving the Student House (Kårhuset) to host more activities there, including a newly renovated lecture hall," says Patrik Blomberg.
Both Patrik and Ibrahim also mention that a joint event for both unions is planned for the fall. Joint pub events will also take place at both campus Flemingsberg and campus Solna in 2025.
Why do you think students should join the union?
"Studying is usually a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so it’s important to make it as enjoyable and fulfilling as possible. I also think you should try to influence your study time as much as possible, and being active in the union or participating in KI’s councils is a good way to do that," says Ibrahim Topal.
"I agree. It’s also about community and meeting new people. And most importantly, having fun because there are so many exciting events planned throughout the year!" says Patrik Blomberg.
Vice Presidents for 2025
This year, MF has three Vice Presidents sharing the role: Madina Kozhayeva from the Speech Therapy program, Manojj Dhinakaran from the Master's program in Biomedicine, and Artem Tjuntonov, the Medical program.
For OF, Alexander Suei from the Dental program is the Vice President.
