Three KI researchers among the “Future research leaders“The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, SSF, has appointed the eight generation of "Future research leader", three researchers from Karolinska Institutet. The researchers receive 15 million SEK each during a five year period and will join a leadership training program.

In the spring of 2022, the network Senior Faculty at KI conducted a survey on the activities of KI professors born in or before 1953. The results show that the professors are still heavily engaged in research and bring close to SEK 300 million a year into the university.

Ulrika Marklund has been awarded the European Research Council’s Consolidator grant 2022 for research about how different neurons within the enteric nervous system (ENS) obtain their identities.

The Swedish Kidney Foundation has appointed the researchers who will be receiving money this year for kidney research. Out of a total of 49 researchers and SEK 6.1 million, 19 researchers at Karolinska Institutet will share SEK 2.2 million. In connection with the recognition of the grants, one KI researcher will be awarded the Bengt Rippes Research Prize.

Donation to KI’s Centre for Health Crises Karolinska Institutet’s Centre for Health Crises is to receive SEK 15 million grant from Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation. The money will be used to build up the centre and develop its activities over the coming two years.

KI receives 60 million SEK from the Swedish Childhood Cancer FundThe Swedish Childhood Cancer Fund has decided to grant SEK 150 million in grants to Swedish childhood cancer research, of which SEK 60 million to a total of 32 researchers at Karolinska Institutet.

KI awarded EU support for major chemical risk projectThe EU has granted Karolinska Institutet support for several new projects under the Horizon Europe programme, the Union's most important funding programme for research and innovation. Several new KI investments for promoting pioneering researchNew investments are now being implemented to strengthen Karolinska Institutet’s position as a pioneering research university. Many of these investments are aimed at more junior researchers and include the KI Research Incubator (KIRI), a virtual forum for multidisciplinary collaboration. Two other initiatives are also in the pipeline – a mentor and coaching programme and a new network to enhance the qualification prospects for female researchers and teachers.

In the largest funding round from the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation (Hjärt-Lungfonden), researchers at Karolinska Institutet will share a total of 95,776,000 SEK. All in all, approximately 70 projects at KI will benefit from the grant.

They are awarded ERC Proof of Concept GrantsThree research group leaders at Karolinska Institutet receive European Research Council Proof of Concept (ERC PoC) 2022 grants, which are awarded to researchers who already have funding from the ERC and now wish to develop the innovative potential of their discoveries. Projects funded at KI include working towards commercialisation of a new sequencing method and scaling up production of artificial spider-silk textiles.

StratNeuro supports clinical neuroscience research in 2022The StratNeuro board has reviewed the neuroscience submissions to the SLL call “Kliniska Forskare” (2020) and decided to support Mikael Tiger with SEK 500,000, for his project entitled "Optimized treatment for depression: mechanisms of action and response markers and antidepressive effect versus side effects".

KI researcher Marcus Buggert has been awarded the prestigious ERC Starting Grant for his research on human cell-mediated immunity against virus diseases. In all, the European Research Council through this call will invest EUR 619 million in 397 young research leaders.

Natalia Rivera, Assistant Professor at the Department of Medicine Solna, has received the pulmonary medicine research grant for genetic research in sarcoidosis from the Swedish Pulmonary Medicine Association (SLMF). She receives SEK 250 000 for 2022 for the project "Integration of omics data to identify potential drug targets in sarcoidosis".

SEK 18 million awarded from the Sjöberg FoundationFive researchers from Karolinska Institutet have been awarded grants from the Sjöberg Foundation, in total a sum of SEK 18.1 million. The foundation supports research with a focus on cancer, health and the environment.

International cancer award to two KI researchers KI researchers Bennie Lemmens and Kirsty Spalding have been granted 2021 ASPIRE Awards from The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research for their innovative and bold ideas on cancer research. They are two of a total of 25 award recipients who will jointly receive nearly $9.5 million (SEK 86 million).

Eleven researchers at five departments at Karolinska Institutet have received funding from Cancer- och Allergifonden (Cancer and Allergy Fund) for their point-of-care research projects on cancer and allergies. The researchers from Karolinska were allocated SEK 2.6 million. In total, the Fund distributed a total of five million SEK to Swedish cancer and allergy research.

Georgios Sotiriou receives prestigious Research Environment grant Georgios Sotiriou, researcher at the Department of Microbiology, Tumour and Cell Biology, has received Research Environment grant for interdisciplinary research from the Swedish Research Council. He receives SEK 30 million for the years 2022-2027 for the project "Nanoengineered precision therapies of lower respiratory tract infections".

Over a quarter of a billion SEK for cancer research at KI79 KI researchers have received a total of SEK 254,450,000 in grants from the Swedish Cancer Society. In addition, four Fellowship prevention grants were also awarded to researchers at KI. In total, the Swedish Cancer Society distributed SEK 850 million, which is the largest amount ever.

Four new Wallenberg Academy Fellows to KIFour of the 27 new Wallenberg Academy Fellows appointed in 2021 will conduct their research at Karolinska Institutet (KI). The five-year grant is financed by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg (KAW) Foundation to provide young and talented PIs with long-term research funding in Sweden. This year, two researchers at KI are also awarded an extended grant within the funding programme.
