At KI, we use a lot of energy every day (electricity, heating, cooling and steam). Ahead of holidays and long weekends, when the premises are used less than usual, it is a good opportunity to avoid unnecessary electricity consumption. Here are some simple energy-saving tips for KI’s office premises, from KI’s environmental coordinators.

During the Easter break week (week 15), work will be carried out to restore the Banting dining hall after a previous leakage. This will limit the use of the dining hall and access to the area during the work.

Taking place from 24 August to 4 September 2026, this 4 ECTS Blended Intensive Programme combines online and on-site learning, focusing on exploring cutting-edge developments at the intersection of neuroscience, robotics, and digital health. For the first time, the course Sustainable Health and Development was offered to master’s students within the Master’s Programme in Global Health at Karolinska Institutet. While the course has previously been delivered to undergraduate and doctoral students, it now offers new opportunities for interdisciplinary learning at the master’s level and for international collaboration.

The President has appointed Tobias Alfvén at the Department of Global Public Health as deputy dean of doctoral education, starting 1 July. With long-standing experience in research, teaching, clinical practice and leadership, he now looks forward to contributing to the continued development of KI’s doctoral education.

On Thursday, 26 March, the Police Authority will carry out a major training exercise in and around Tomtebodaskolan. The exercise will include several components and will also involve role-players acting as pupils in a school environment.

In 2025, dental educators from Uganda and Zimbabwe visited Dentmed. During the visit, Jonas Erdenborg and Michelle Lau met with colleagues from the dental education programme in Zimbabwe and provided information about the dental hygienist programme at Karolinska Institutet, as well as the importance of preventive care in dentistry. The dental hygienist profession exists in Zimbabwe, but the number of practitioners is limited.

On 20 February, KI submitted the annual Environmental Management Report (EMS Report) to The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and the Ministry of Education. The results show that we need to continue working systematically, in order to improve KI’s environmental performance.

At the moment, there are several attempted scams targeting KI, both via email and telephone calls.

Farzana Rahman is a clinical physiotherapist with a strong interest in improving eldercare. Her doctoral thesis focuses on health and social care for older people, with particular emphasis on home healthcare and home help.

PhD candidate Toàn Khac Nguyen recently completed his half‑time review. In this interview, he reflects on his research into the cultural and clinical dynamics that shape childbirth practices, including the puzzling combination of very high caesarean rates and low reported newborn complications in Hanoi.

Following a period during which some activities were put on hold, the work on the leadership and development of managers and leaders is now back in full swing. During the first half of 2026, several development initiatives will be launched to support both new and experienced managers and leaders at KI.

The Swedish Research Council has published national guidelines for responsible internationalisation.

On the night of 23-24 March, Vattenfall will carry out a planned power outage. Several buildings will be affected, including Flemingsbergs centrum, Neo and TAH, and will be without power for approximately five hours.

The outage will last from Monday 23 March at approximately 23:00 to Tuesday 24 March at approximately 04:00. According to the information KI has received, ANA8 or the hospital will not be affected by the outage.

Karolinska Institutet is offering collaboration awards to strengthen its long‑term partnerships with the University of Tokyo and RIKEN.

Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes important steps in KI’s continuing development. I have now made my decision on KI’s new deans and deputy deans, who will be assuming office on 1 July this year, replacing today’s academic vice presidents.

Joint seed funding is available for research collaborations between the University of Tokyo and Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University.

KI is part of NeurotechEU, a European University Alliance. The NeurotechEU collaboration funding has opened, offering up to €10,000 to support educators who want to develop meaningful, cross‑institutional learning activities with a focus on challenge-based learning.

The course leadership teams have awarded diplomas to the medical students who achieved the highest overall results in the courses Clinical Medicine 1 (KM1) and Clinical Medicine 2 (KM2). The courses are given during semesters 5 and 6 of the study programme in medicine at Karolinska Institutet.

With an increased need for coordination and more professional support for the operation of Karolinska Institutet's research infrastructure, Research Infrastructure Karolinska Institutet - RIKI has been established. This is a collaborative organisation dedicated to strengthening research infrastructure, offering researchers more coordinated and advanced support.

VIS is based on the Qlikview tool, which will be replaced by Qliksense. To ensure that KI continues to have a stable and developable business information system, the migration of VIS to the new platform is now beginning. All VIS users will be affected to a greater or lesser extent, including researchers and managers.
