Energy-saving tips for weekends and holidays

At KI, we use a lot of energy every day (electricity, heating, cooling and steam). Ahead of holidays and long weekends, when the premises are used less than usual, it is a good opportunity to avoid unnecessary electricity consumption. Here are some simple energy-saving tips for KI’s office premises, from KI’s environmental coordinators.
Before you go on leave – remember to:
- Switch off computers, monitors, desk lamps and other electrical equipment. If there happens to be an electric portable heater or fan, make sure you switch them off completely and unplug them.
- Do not leave appliances on standby. Unplug all cables from docking stations, height-adjustable desks, monitors, printers, photocopiers, dishwashers and similar equipment. Electrical appliances always draw power unless they are completely switched off, so equipment that is not in use, should be switched off.
- Switch off all lights. Even though there are presence sensors in offices and meeting rooms that switch the lights off after a certain time if no one is moving in the room, it is still important to ensure you switch them off yourself. Please also close the doors to meeting rooms, toilets and other areas – this prevents motion detectors from switching the lights on unnecessarily when someone walks past.
Are you the last to leave the office? Please take a quick tour of the premises to check that lights, screens, desk lamps and other appliances are switched off.

About energy efficiency in KI’s facilities
In 2025, KI’s electricity consumption in kWh/m² increased compared with previous years, from 128 kWh/m² to 133 kWh/m². However, total energy consumption fell, mainly because KI’s property owners are implementing numerous energy-efficiency measures that help us reduce property-related energy consumption. By following energy-saving tips, we can also help to reduce energy consumption from KI’s operations.Do you have more energy‑saving tips or want to know more?
