The Expert Pool – a new resource for advanced technical support for research

Karolinska Institutet is now launching the Expert Pool, a new shared resource designed to strengthen research through improved access to advanced technical support. The initiative aims to meet a growing need for specialised expertise and create better conditions for collaboration and efficient use of resources within KI.
Research at KI is becoming increasingly technology-intensive and methodologically advanced. New technologies, instruments and analytical methods open great opportunities, but also place greater demands on access to the right expertise. At the same time, there is currently a wealth of highly qualified technical expertise spread throughout the organisation.
With the Expert Pool, KI aims to create a shared structure that makes it easier to harness this collective knowledge and make it available where it is most needed.
An initiative for greater coordination and quality
The Expert Pool has been developed to complement existing research support and meet needs that cannot always be accommodated within individual departments. By bringing together advanced technical expertise in a shared pool, researchers can obtain support more quickly on complex issues, whilst strengthening collaboration across organisational boundaries.
The initiative is a two-year pilot project funded by the Infrastructure Board and coordinated by the IT Department.
Expert pool open for expressions of interest
With the launch of the Expert Pool, KI is now inviting expressions of interest in two areas:
- Research units requiring advanced technical support can submit requests to the Expert Pool.
- KI staff with specialist expertise in relevant technical fields can register their interest in joining the pool and contributing to assignments outside their own day-to-day work.
Participating in the Expert Pool is a way to share your expertise for cutting-edge research, gain valuable experience and, at the same time, contribute to the development of KI’s research in a broader context.

What skills are in demand?
The aim is to offer support in modern and advanced analytical methods and information technologies directly linked to ongoing research. Assignments may involve part-time work for a few weeks ut to roughly a year, in areas such as:
- AI computation
- Advanced cloud services
- Databases and database design
- Analytical tools
- Programming and systems development
- National computing Resources
Assignments may include anything from advice and guidance to hands-on implementation such as development work, data analysis or other specialised tasks.
