A new study from the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) at Karolinska Institutet shows that women with premenstrual disorders have significantly lower quality of life compared to women without such conditions. The more severe form, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), has the most negative impact on well-being.

Two research infrastructures, one that Karolinska Institutet coordinates and one it participates in, have been awarded a grant in the Swedish Research Council’s call for research infrastructure of national interest: the Chemical Biological Consortium and Protein Production Sweden 2.0. Seventeen other infrastructures have also been granted financing.

In early September 2025, NASP’s team from Karolinska Institutet travelled to Pisa, Italy, for the third and final review meeting of the EXPERIENCE project, hosted by the University of Pisa. Running from January 2021 to June 2025, the project was funded under the EXCELLENT SCIENCE – Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) call within the Horizon 2020 framework of the European Commission.

President Annika Östman Wernerson has taken decisions on further aspects of KI’s new model for the allocation of the government appropriation for research and doctoral education. The decisions concern performance-bases allocations and premises costs. The model will come into effect in its entirety in 2026, replacing the former “activity” model.

In a new study published in Nature Communications, researchers at Karolinska Institutet and Queen Mary University of London have investigated how the physical structure of fat tissue helps ovarian cancer cells invade the body, offering potential new treatment strategies.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive cancer types. This year’s draft budget has landed. For the higher education sector, we can see that the government is signalling a greater focus on excellence and competitiveness. The Biophysical Society has selected Erdinc Sezgin, Associate Professor at Karolinska Institutet, SciLifeLab and the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health, as the recipient of the 2026 Early Independent Career Award.
