Researcher, screenwriter and composer Sissela Nutley is awarded KI's Culture Prize for her work in uniting culture and science to convey messages about the brain and mental health, including through the school program “Det syns inte” (It is not visible) which is used in classrooms around Sweden. The prize was awarded during KI Culture Day on 30 October.

We at Dentmed and Unitand continue to reduce our negative environmental impact. The audit was conducted by Susanne Evergård from Intertek on October 22-24, 2024. It resulted in a continued certification, without deviations. This confirms that we are all making a difference!

In Clinicum's network there are advisers with many different backgrounds who contribute with their experience - all to enhance your research. On June 17, the training program ‘Future Academic Leaders’ (FAL) for NVS concluded, after running for 1,5 years. 36 participants completed the program, which included a mix of new and already established managers, as well as employees on their way to potentially become leaders in the future. There is a basic FAL program at KI, which NVS has tailored to suit our needs. The results of the evaluations indicate that the participants were very satisfied with the program. Northern Nigeria has one of the highest mortality rates for children globally – in Jigawa, 1 in 6 children still die before their 5th birthday. The INSPIRING trial aimed to reduce child mortality with a package of interventions focused on participatory approaches to capacity building and empowerment.

After the freezer failure in Neo, the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (IVO) opened a supervisory case. The case has now been closed and IVO considers that the investigations carried out and the measures taken by Karolinska Institutet are sufficient to fulfil the requirements of the Biobanks Act.

The Swedish National Audit Office's reviews of, among other things, information security at Swedish higher education institutions have revealed major shortcomings. KI has therefore decided to raise the level of security in several areas. To achieve increased information security and better management and utilisation of resources, Coordinated IT will be implemented - the decision has been made by KI's University Director and the Consistory.

KI is working to increase the internationalization of its educational programmes. The aim is to increase quality and diversity and to prepare KI's students for work in a global labor market.

The Department of Medicine Solna has purchased some mobile gyms that can be borrowed within the department. Having exercise equipment nearby can be a good way to get a few minutes of exercise during the day - good for both body and mind.

This year, Karolinska Institutet celebrates 25 years of support for visiting researchers and overseas doctoral students. Sharing knowledge and experience leads to innovation and progress, which is why we cannot do without our international collaborations. There are many support functions in place for our visiting researchers and overseas doctoral students, all to ensure their reception is as good as we can make it.

On 1 January 2025, a new organisation of KI’s Professional Services (PS) will come into force. Six existing offices will cease to exist and three new ones will be established. At the same time, working methods for increased coordination of cross-cutting issues within the professional services will be developed.

Do you need to find a docent at KI in a specific subject area? You can easily extract a list in KI RIMS. Just as KI's research information system has been open for a year, the report ‘Docents at KI’ is released, which lists both employed and affiliated docents at KI.

Rachael Sugars at the Department of Dental Medicine is this year’s recipient of the Catherine Everts Research Foundation Fund. The project is entitled “Clinical and Diagnostic Management of Oral Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease after Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation”.

On 5 September, master students in global health and public health attended a Welcome Day that involved information about what it means to be a student at GPH, available student support, and a case challenge.

GPH welcomed the Vice President of Higher Education earlier this week. Ewa Ehrenborg, a professor of molecular cardiovascular medicine at the Department of Medicine, Solna, has been the chairperson of the Committee for Higher Education since January 1, 2023.

On July 1, 2023, research group leader Karin Jensen was employed as professor at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS).

A decision was made by KI’s President on Tuesday regarding compensation for the freezer failure in Neo. The Department of Medicine, Huddinge (MedH) will be compensated with a total of SEK 30 million to be distributed to the affected researchers for costs incurred, and to begin recreating the collection of research material that has been lost.

The Department of Dental Medicine and the University Dental Clinic are unique at KI in being environmentally certified according to ISO 14001:2015. On October 22 to 24, 2024, we welcome Susanne Evergård from Intertek who will perform re-certification. She is here all days.

Seasonal flu will soon be sweeping the country. All Dentmed and Unitand employees have the opportunity to get vaccinated against seasonal flu at no cost, according to a management decision.

In connection with the installation of professors on 3 October, Professor Jennifer Cleland received Karolinska Institutet's prize for research in medical education, KIPRIME, 2024. Her work has, among other things, changed the way medical universities in the UK select and examine students. The aim of Professor Cleland's research is to address inequalities in healthcare skills needs.

We welcome Iréne Zettervall to our economics unit at LIME.

If you have an interest in culture, there are several initiatives at KI to participate and get involved in. Giulia Gaudenzi, Assistant Professor at the Department of Global Public Health is also a member of the Cultural Council at KI and we asked her to list the cultural activities available at KI.

Stephan Rössner and Carol Tishelman are to be awarded the 2024 KI Silver Medal. The medal is conferred upon individuals who have made particularly commendable efforts in support of Karolinska Institutet’s activities. The researchers will receive their medals at the Diligence and Devotion ceremony next February.

On Saturday 5 October, the ARC Team, consisting of Franziska Steffens and Federico Triolo, took part in the 2024 Mental Health Run at Djurgården, in close to perfect weather conditions.

To facilitate new and existing contacts between researchers and doctoral students as well as increase research collaboration across the NeurotechEU network, the KI NeurotechEU group is introducing the availability of limited competitive funds for a lab visit for PhD students and postdocs during Spring 2025.

On 27 September, the Science Festival Researcher Friday (Forskarfredag) was held at Albanova. During the day, many activities were held, including a Researchers‘ Fair and the Researchers’ Grand Prix competition. Many KI researchers participated in the programme and met curious high school students.
