Anna-Theresia Ekman recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully defending her doctoral thesis, which examines developmental risks among children in sub-Saharan Africa. Through extensive field studies in five countries, she shows that many children are at risk of not reaching age-appropriate developmental milestones – particularly in environments marked by poverty and undernutrition.

On June 4, Irene Wanyana presented her project, "Multisectoral Approaches to Sustainable Health in Uganda: A Focus on the Role of Climatic Variabilities on Maternal and Child Health," during her half-time review. Confident in her progress and with continuous support from her supervisors at KI and Makerere University, she believes she is on track to complete her PhD within the planned timeframe.

We’re heading towards the holidays with sure signs of summer: expectation and pride at the degree ceremonies in Aula Medica, blossoming elderflower on campus and the forthcoming political week in Almedalen.

This fall, the transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11 will begin, affecting a large number of computers at KI that need to be updated or replaced if they are older computer models that do not meet the technical requirements.

The meeting focused on efforts for communication support, a new project office, and a project for managing research data. There was also time for questions and answers about the project to modernise working methods and the workplace.

Luan Vo recently marked an important milestone in his PhD journey by successfully completing his half-time review. His project, titled "Evaluating Private Sector Engagement through an Intermediary Agency Model for Enhanced Tuberculosis Care and Prevention in Viet Nam", explores innovative ways to strengthen TB care. In this interview, he reflects on his progress so far and shares his goals for the road ahead.

The Communications and Public Relations Office has appointed one communicator per office within the Professional Services. The communicators will help coordinate and strengthen PS’ communication, both within and between offices. By extension, this is a step towards improving internal communication and dialogue throughout KI.

The new Project Office will coordinate and streamline major projects within KI's Professional Services (PS). The aim is to create better conditions for prioritisation, resource planning and implementation of development projects.

On 2 June 2025, a group of 19 doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers from ARC came together for a one-day retreat at the Skepparholmen conference venue in Nacka. The retreat theme was visual communication in research.

Global Bridges is a unique program that offers junior healthcare science researchers at Karolinska Institutet (KI) the opportunity to invite an international scholar to Stockholm for a week of academic exchange and collaboration. Since its inception, the program has been held six times between 2013 and 2022, welcoming 37 international scholars from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America, alongside 48 junior researchers from KI.

GPH have a close collaboration with the Centre for Epidemiology and Community Medicine (CES), Region Stockholm, where several of our research groups are based. Like GPH, CES conducts public health research and education as well as strategic public health work, intending to contribute to good and equal health for the population. Henna Hasson, Director of CES, shared some insights on the collaboration and activities this spring. Here are some of the highlights.

Helena Erlandsson Harris has been appointed new Head of Department at the Department of Medicine, Solna (MedS). The decision was signed by Dean Carl Johan Sundberg on 22 May 2025.

Five people are to receive Karolinska Institutet’s Grand Silver Medal, and a further two KI’s Silver Medal. These two classes of medal are awarded to people who have made tremendous or excellent efforts, respectively, in support of KI’s activities and will be presented this year at the installation ceremony on 9 October.

As a cardiologist and former head of the cardiac intensive care unit at Karolinska University Hospital, I have seen the serious consequences of ignoring gender differences in medical research and clinical practice. Some international leaders now want to stop research on sex and gender, which is not only a step backward but also a direct threat to patients' lives and health in our field.

Clinicum methodological advice, aimed at researchers at KI or Region Stockholm, has, since its inception, supported over 300 researchers with methodological advice. A new report by the second Lancet Commission on Adolescent Health and Wellbeing , with contributions from Karolinska Institute, shows that adolescents' health globally is at a tipping point. Without targeted action, at least half of the world's adolescents will be at risk of poor health by 2030.

Karolinska Institutet (KI) and the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) have continued their tradition of academic collaboration by organizing a joint course for doctoral students once again this year. Held at the UTokyo Hongo Campus in Japan, the course titled "Bioinformatics Analysis and Visualization of Medical Genomics Data (H7F5633)", led by Dr. Carsten Daub, brought together 11 students from KI and 16 from UTokyo.

Karolinska Institutet will participate in a national follow-up of study support for students with disablilities.

When Martin Bergö and I entered office as, respectively, vice-president and president just over two years ago, we also entered an extensive dialogue with all the different parts of KI. This was a conscious strategy that gave rise, in part, to several focus areas for strengthening KI through the establishment of sustainable structures, greater collaboration, clarity and transparency.

Close ties between education and research are essential to a university, there being a mutually reliant relationship between them. There are environments with both a strong educational profile and a strong research profile at all KI departments, but there is not always close interaction between them. The Faculty Board has therefore decided to issue a call for funding to promote fruitful ties between such environments.

Within the national quality assurance system, universities are responsible for initiating and organising external reviews of their educational programmes. KI has decided that all education must undergo an external review every eight years, and this year it is the doctoral education’s turn. KI has only one doctoral education, in medical science, so all departments are affected.

KI researchers are invited to submit an expression of interest for new strategic research areas and clusters of excellence for groundbreaking technologies for the upcoming calls announced by the Government bill for research and innovation. The bill fits Karolinska Institutet’s ambitions and profile very well and provide great opportunity for KI to further strengthen and develop its research and innovative capacity. Deadline 27 May.

The official kick-off meeting for the EDCTP3 funded UTI-Diag project, coordinated by Professor Tobias Alfvén and his team, was held at Karolinska Institutet from April 24 to 25, 2025. The event marked the beginning of the consortium's collaborative efforts, establishing a comprehensive roadmap and work plan for the next 40 months.
