On the occasion of International World AIDS Day, Lars E. Eriksson was invited by Springer Nature to write a 'Behind the Paper' blog post about an article published a few years ago on the development and use of a short scale for measuring stigma among people living with HIV.

The location for incoming and outgoing post has been moved and there are new delivery points for packages in Neo.

On 29 November, University Director Veronika Sundström held a digital staff meeting for KI's operational services (PS). The meeting covered developments within KI's prioritised focus areas, risk and impact assessments of the decision to reorganise PS, and the status of the project to modernise the PS workplace and working methods. Tips from Grants Office regarding current calls

Following a decision taken by KI president Annika Östman Wernerson on 26 November, the Medical History and Heritage Unit (MHK) will be integrated with the Karolinska Institutet University Library (KIB) on 1 January, becoming its own division and with the same management as before.

Karolinska Institutet was honoured in October by a visit from Professor Brian Hodges, the 2016 KIPRIME recipient. The award, which is given in recognition of achievements in medical education research, has been of profound significance to him, and now he was in Sweden to open next year’s KIPRIME Fellows, an initiative devised to cultivate the next generation of prize-winners.

Following a reorganisation of the recycling bins in the Neo lunchroom, the amount of residual waste has been halved. This means that less waste is incinerated and more is recycled.

The Primula client and the PA web will therefore be closed according to plan from Friday 11/29/2024 at 09:00 to Monday 2024-12-02 at 10:00 am.

Two roads on the Solna campus were renamed in September. Retzius väg is now Blombäcks väg after Margareta Blombäck and Birger Blombäck. Von Eulers väg is now Liljestrands väg, in honour of Göran Liljestrand. The change of name is part of the general review of the names of roads, halls and monuments that began at KI a few years ago.

The agreement with the occupational health service Avonova is now finalised and valid from October 1, 2024, to October, 1 2028, with the possibility of two extensions of two years each. For questions about the agreement, please contact Ia G Wallgren at the central HR Office.

We look forward to a long-term collaboration with Avonova, where the health promotion work is in focus.

Makerere University in Uganda and Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have been collaborating for nearly 25 years. On November 11th 2024 they celebrated their successful partnership during an alumni event at Makerere University's College of Health Sciences in Kampala, Uganda. The event highlighted their achievements, including a joint doctoral program that has supported nearly 50 Makerere doctoral students, many earning double degrees, and the publication of over 500 peer-reviewed articles.

Vice-president Martin Bergö, University Director Veronika Sundström and I want to meet you in our open dialogue meetings in December. These meetings are important sources of perspective, knowledge and insight concerning pressing issues facing KI, such as how we can work even better together as a university and equip ourselves for a constantly changing world.

The FyFa faculty gathered on 18 November for a workshop to start the journey towards “Establishing a FyFa faculty with a shared vision and framework for a sustainable and excellent teaching organisation that fosters collaboration, competence, and world-class education” – FyFa’s strategical goal for the teaching organisation.

During the month of December, food waste management will be introduced in all of KI's buildings. When the food waste is sorted out from other waste, it can be recovered and used as, for example, biogas and biofertilizers. It reduces the burden on the environment and contributes to sustainable development. This has been mandatory for all households and businesses in Sweden since 1 January 2024.

Åsa Olsson, PhD student at NVS, is awarded the The Swedish Society of Nursing Doctoral Scholarship 2024. Her PhD project contributes significant knowledge about conversations regarding end-of-life care for the elderly.

After discussion in both the ANA Futura Drafting- and Steering Committee, the service team has purchased new porcelain for the coffee nodes in the extension/office building.

Elisabet Stener-Victorin has received the Ricardo Azziz Distinguished Researcher Award from the Androgen Excess and PCO Society.

Karolinska Institutet has appointed an advisor to President Annika Östman Wernerson for co-operation with the healthcare sector. On 1 December, Maria Eriksdotter, professor at the Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society, will take up this position.

Karolinska Institutet (KI) celebrates the 25th anniversary of its International Staff Services, which has supported international researchers, doctoral students and their hosting departments since 1999. Held at Campus Solna’s A Working Lab, the event on Tuesday highlighted the importance of collaboration to support KI’s success as a global research hub.

On November 7, 2024, the Swedish Cancer Society's Research Committee awarded Rachael a project grant of 3 million SEK over a 3-year period for her research entitled - “Oral Complications Post- Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation to Model the Transition of Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders to Invasive Oral Cancer.”

On 12 and 13 November a maintenance test of the power will require sequential, brief (5-15 minute) shutdowns of all power in each section of the Neo building. Research groups are recommended to check their equipment afterwards.

The Committee for Research has decided to award grants to 15 networks within the call for funds for interdisciplinary research networks. The aim of the initiative is to strengthen scientific quality and promote collaborations across institutional boundaries.

Javier Leal Martin is a postdoctoral researcher who joined ARC on 1 November 2024. He will be working in Davide Liborio Vetrano's research group.

It´s time again for a new round of our joint exercise activity Pep at Work.

On Thursday evening, 7/11, starting after 7 PM, an update will be made to the underlying systems that send information to profile pages and group pages from KI RIMS to KI’s website.

Thursday 7 November the Fubas system will be updated and it may affect logging in and working in the system during that day.

University of Bergen in collaboration with researchers at Karolinska Institutet have been awarded a significant grant funded by Horizon Europe with €7 million during 2024-2028 in recognition of their dedication to target Epstein-Barr virus to treat and prevent Multiple Sclerosis.

Congratulations to Linn Öijerstedt for receiving financial support by BioArctic for her postdoctoral fellowship in the pursue of finding a marker of TDP-43 pathology. In addition, Linn has received grants from Björklunds foundation and Demensfonden for her projects on cognitive and behavioural impairment in ALS.

On October 30, 2024, Ronaldo was awarded a Starting Grant within Medicine and Health of 6 million SEK over a 4-year period for his research “Host-microbial interactions in oral mucosal immunopathology”.

Some changes will soon take place for some of our centrally managed software licences. Some software will be replaced with new versions, some prices will be adjusted upwards to meet increased costs from manufacturers, and others will be adjusted downwards as we have managed to negotiate better prices.

The Collaborative Research Projects will support new multidisciplinary collaborations for ambitious yet feasible research projects in all areas of Neuroscience. The aim is to promote multidisciplinary research through new and innovative collaborations of outstanding scientific quality.

Normally, all titles from ongoing employment/affiliations at KI are displayed on profile pages and contact cards, but right now many titles are missing due to a bug in one of the KI RIMS integrations.
