Upcoming news about the Karyon computers at KI
This fall, the transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11 will begin, affecting a large number of computers at KI that need to be updated or replaced if they are older computer models that do not meet the technical requirements.

Today, all new PCs are delivered with Windows 11, and in October support for the older Windows 10 will cease at Microsoft. Ahead of this, all centrally managed computers (Karyon clients) must be upgraded to Windows 11. In cases where the laptop is an older model that is not supported, it should be replaced with a new computer.
There are also older Mac computers in the organisation today that are reaching "end-of-life" and cannot handle future, necessary system updates. These will also need to be replaced this fall.
ITA is now preparing the work for the fall
This will involve a logistical effort for the computers of the employees concerned. As usual, all new computer purchases are recommended to be made through the life cycle management service as a rental computer.
Work is currently underway to replace the computer models offered within the service, and the new models are expected to be in place for ordering after the summer.
The IT Office will keep you as a user updated on the new models and their prices via the Staff Portal after the summer vacation.
Administrative managers will receive detailed information about which computers are affected at each department, and we will also return to details about the update process after the summer.
Inactive computers
In connection with this, inactive computers — i.e., computers that have not been used in 2025 — will also be removed from the Karyon service. This is a security measure, meaning that they will need to be reactivated at the IT Office if they are to be used in the future.
How do you know if you are affected?
If you have Windows 10 on your computer today, this update affects you, and you will either need to update your computer to Windows 11 or purchase a new one. Details on the procedure for updating to Windows 11 will be presented after the summer, so please keep an eye on the Staff Portal.
