Upcoming calls: Expressions of interest from KI researchers by 27 May

KI researchers are invited to submit an expression of interest for new strategic research areas and clusters of excellence for groundbreaking technologies for the upcoming calls announced by the Government bill for research and innovation. The bill fits Karolinska Institutet’s ambitions and profile very well and provide great opportunity for KI to further strengthen and develop its research and innovative capacity. Deadline 27 May.

The upcoming calls by the Swedish Research Council and Vinnova will require coordination by the applicant universities.

Background and aim

The basis for these initiatives is excellence, internationalisation, and innovation with the goal to strengthen research and innovation environments and attractiveness of top research talents. Details of the calls are yet to be finalized. 

New SFO call is expected to open in early autumn 2025 (more info is expected in May/June), within 8 different research areas including Health, Life Science and AI.

Cluster of excellence for groundbreaking technology calls are expected to open in autumn of 2026,  planning grants have however already been announced by the Swedish Research Council (call open 27 May – 19 August 2025) and Vinnova (call opens in June 2025). 

KI internal process

The KI steering group will manage incoming expressions of interest by reviewing

and categorizing them based on relevance and alignment with the initiative criteria. It will prioritize the most promising proposals and support the development of competitive proposals.
