International recognition for KI researcher in exercise physiology

Professor Jan Henriksson elected fellow of new global physiology academy
Jan Henriksson, Professor Emeritus at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Karolinska Institutet, has been elected a Fellow of the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS). The distinction is awarded to researchers who have made notable contributions to the understanding of how the human body functions.
Throughout his research career, Henriksson has studied how physical activity affects muscle function. His work has contributed to greater insight into what happens in the body during regular exercise, and how these changes can lead to improved health and a reduced risk of illness.
“We have been able to show that certain changes in muscle metabolism occur quickly during training, and that these changes are important for the body’s adaptation,” says Jan Henriksson.
The IUPS Academy of Physiology was established in 2021 to highlight the importance of physiology in science and health. The Academy brings together researchers from around the world and annually selects a limited number of Honorary Fellows and Fellows. In addition to recognizing research excellence, the Academy serves as a network for collaboration and knowledge sharing within the field of physiology.
“It is an honour to be part of an initiative that aims to strengthen the role of physiology globally. It may lead to new research ideas and help spread physiological knowledge more widely,” says Jan Henriksson.
Henriksson is one of the first Swedish researchers to be elected to the Academy. As a Fellow, he will also have the opportunity to contribute to shaping its future direction.
