Meet Nick Tobin, lecturer, principal researcher and docent at the Department of Oncology and Pathology at KI. Nick teaches in the subject area of Bioinformatics, but also runs seminars on various aspects of cancer including its hallmarks and the utility of cancer gene expression signatures in a clinical setting. Nick is one of Clinicum's advisors within Bioinformatics.

KI has signed an agreement with the Public Health Agency of Sweden that enables the lending of personnel between the authorities. Personnel loans (secondments) can be utilised both during peacetime crises and in normal situations to assist each other when there is a temporary need for specific expertise.

On 26 September, around 2500 high school students from the Stockholm area visited the science festival Researchers' Night (Forskarfredag) at Albanova. Many researchers from KI participated in the programme, including the Science fair and the Researchers' Grand Prix. The event is a collaboration between KI, KTH, Stockholm University, the City of Stockholm and Vetenskapens hus. The initiative is part of the EU's Researchers' Night celebrating science across Europe.

President Annika Östman Wernerson has taken decisions on further aspects of KI’s new model for the allocation of the government appropriation for research and doctoral education. The decisions concern performance-bases allocations and premises costs. The model will come into effect in its entirety in 2026, replacing the former “activity” model.

This means that other functions that are currently using Dynamics can transfer cases to our team KIB-Bibliotekssupport. This year’s draft budget has landed. For the higher education sector, we can see that the government is signalling a greater focus on excellence and competitiveness. In it, it is proposed that five per cent of the direct research appropriation be divided among universities based on excellence. There is also a general SEK 172.6 million increase in the appropriation, of which KI receives an extra SEK 20.5 million.

Lazare Ntirenganya successfully passed his ISP review at Karolinska Institutet on 17 September. With a background in pharmacy and public health methodology, his doctoral research focuses on drug safety and interactions in the treatment of parasitic infections among school-aged children in Rwanda. Building on years of experience from the PROFORMA project, his work aims to improve the effectiveness and safety of mass drug administration programs.

With the new KI RIMS report Biosketch, KI researchers can quickly produce a summary with a photo and short biography based on their profile page. The need for a uniform and easily accessible short CV has been highlighted by the International Relations Office, which often shares researcher profiles in connection with international visits and collaborations. The hope is that the biosketch report will simplify the work of both researchers and international coordinators.

KI RIMS, KI's research information system, now contains two reports designed to make it easier to find researchers at a certain academic level within a specific subject area. The first is the report "Degrees of Licentiate/Doctor", which lists all active researchers at KI who have completed a doctoral or licentiate degree. The second is the previously available docent report, which has now been expanded to include professors and is called "Docents and Professors at KI".

Karolinska Institutet offers all employees fire safety training, that includes both theoretical and practical content. The fire safety training is mandatory for all KI staff and must be undertaken within 6 months from employment, and then repeated every 4:th years.

Märit Halmin is an intensive care physician and researcher in the research group for Global Disaster Medicine – health needs and interventions at GPH. This summer, she worked at a field hospital in Al-Mawasi, Gaza – an area declared a humanitarian zone but where bombs fell around the clock. For five weeks, she treated seriously injured children and adults. In tents without running water and with a lack of pain relief, every medical intervention became a battle against time and resources.
