Welcome day for Global Public Health students

The Department of Global Public Health hosted the annual Welcome Day for new students on Wednesday 3 September.

The event was kicked off by the Head of the Department of Global Public Health, Marie Hasselberg, who welcomed the new Global Health and Public Health Sciences Master’s cohorts and gave an overview of the department. This was followed by presentations by Helle Mölsted Alvesson, Departmental Director of Education, on “What it means to be a student at GPH?” and Educational Officer, Karima Lundin, on “Navigating the first year from a student’s perspective”. Åsa Burman, from Stockholm University, then held a presentation entitled “Finish on Time: Work smarter, not harder”, where she shared suggestions for successfully navigating the academic demands of a Master’s level education.

Case challange
In the afternoon, students were divided into inter-programme groups that worked on a case challenge entitled “Health on planet under pressure”. The session was organized by GPH Associate Professors Ann Liljas and Yajun Liang together with Ester Gubi, epidemiologist at SLSO and affiliated to research at GPH. Each group was assigned a 2nd year student facilitator and asked to build a problem tree centered around a focal problem related to the health effects of the climate crisis. At the end of the session, they presented their findings in smaller groups.
At the end of the day, the Student Union Public Health Section described their work after which Helle Mölsted Alvesson invited the students to experience a “Swedish Fika”.
During the day, we saw a high level of student engagement and hope that the new cohort is motivated to start their KI Master’s journey!
