Märit Halmin is an intensive care physician and researcher in the research group for Global Disaster Medicine – health needs and interventions at GPH. This summer, she worked at a field hospital in Al-Mawasi, Gaza – an area declared a humanitarian zone but where bombs fell around the clock. For five weeks, she treated seriously injured children and adults. In tents without running water and with a lack of pain relief, every medical intervention became a battle against time and resources.

After two years based at Makerere University in Uganda, Stefan Swartling Peterson has returned to KI with new perspectives on health systems under pressure — from maternal health to the rise of non-communicable diseases and climate-related challenges. Through CESH, the work continues with strengthened collaborations in Kampala.

Meet one of our PhD students at the Department, Joseph Junior Muwonge, in the EPiCSS research group, whose work focuses on improving access to mental healthcare in Sweden. In this interview, he shares what drew him to KI, key findings from his research on socioeconomic and migrant-related disparities, and reflections on his PhD journey so far.

Professor Eleni Aklillu, group leader of the GH-Pharma reserach group, has been awarded a €1.8 million grant to coordinate the PREGART clinical trial, funded by the European Union through GH-EDCTP3. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the project received both a cost and time extension to ensure successful implementation.

On 26 September, the Science festival Researchers' Night (ForskarFredag) and the competition Researchers' Grand Prix, will be organised by Vetenskapens hus, KI, Stockholm University and KTH. The audience at Albanova consists mainly of upper secondary school students from Stockholm schools, but the event is open to anyone interested in research.

KI University Library has developed a new digital resource with advice and recommendations on how generative AI tools can be used effectively and responsibly in studies.

Clinicum's popular lunch seminars are back this autumn with an expanded focus: in addition to health data, clinical trials will now also be a central theme. The background to this is that Clinicum is developing extended support in methodology related to clinical trials – an area where the need for advice is high.

This autumn, we are focusing a little extra on the theme of visualisation, starting with a KIB Talk with Matthias Stahl from DER SPIEGEL! The attack on the Microsoft SharePoint software reported in the media on 23 July has not affected KI. SharePoint and other Microsoft services are used at KI, but the installation solution that KI has has not been affected by the current attack.

It was a full agenda when NVS hosted the traditional summer lunch on Wednesday, June 18. In addition to an interested audience, even the sun made an appearance.

On July 7th at 12:19 PM, a fire alarm was triggered in the dining area C1012 due to smoke development in a microwave oven. The alarm required everyone in the atrium to evacuate to the assembly point (the area between Biomedicum and Aula Medica). The evacuation went smoothly, and no material damage or physical injuries occurred.

Damola Bakare recently presented his PhD project plans during his ISP seminar. His project focuses on the implementation of improvised bubble CPAP (bCPAP) for treating severe pediatric pneumonia in Nigeria. In this article, we delve deeper into his project goals and explore the motivations driving his research.

On 24 June, Julius Salako presented his research plans in his ISP seminar. His research will focus on assessing adherence to pneumonia treatment guidelines in hospitals and identifying specific deviations in practices. In this interview, he describes his PhD project and shares his ambitious research goals.

PhD student Phuthumani Mlotshwa is dedicated to enhancing diagnostics for infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. Through collaboration with local communities and the analysis of clinical data and biosamples, his project aims to improve disease management and develop sustainable biobanking practices. On 11 June, he successfully passed his half-time review. Here he reflects on his PhD journey up until now: progress, achievements and future goals.

Zandra Milton will take up her new position as chief legal officer at Karolinska Institutet on 1 November 2025. She succeeds Helén Törnqvist, who will retire in August after many years of appreciated work. During the transition period, Helena Scarabin will be acting chief legal officer.

The University Board has decided to extend the terms of office by six months for all academic vice presidents, vice chairs, and faculty representatives in the Faculty Board and the three committees, from 1 January 2026 to 30 June 2026.

Josefin Ullberg at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health has been awarded a research grant from the Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association for a project investigating tolerance development in both IgE-mediated and non-IgE-mediated food allergies in children. The focus is on peanut allergy and the lesser-known condition FPIES.
