As part of the ongoing work to continuously develop KI’s core facilities and ensure the highest quality and relevance for KI’s researchers, the KI Infrastructure Board has decided to conduct an open survey. The survey has previously been carried out in 2021 and 2023, and it is now time for a new round.

KI’s Global Health course combines classroom learning with international fieldwork in countries like Laos, offering students from various programs unique insights into global health systems and challenges. Anders Tegnell, physician and state epidemiologist during the COVID-19 pandemic, recently joined the course as a guest teacher. “It gives new perspectives, and you learn new things”, says Tegnell after travelling to Lao PDR with KI students as part of the Global Health course.

The agenda included a presentation of the educational support office and the new student recruitment strategy, as well as the next steps in the review of operational support. An analysis of what the government's budget proposal means for KI was also carried out.

KI continues its work towards more coordinated and effective operational support. A project involving representatives from both departments and the Professional Services (GVS) is now reviewing support functions, working methods and coordination in order to better meet the demands of core activities and the surrounding world.

A new strategy for student recruitment will help more prospective students discover KI and receive support in finding the programme that suits them best. The strategy sets out the direction and process for the work going forward.

During the autumn term, KI employees have been targeted by attempted fraud via telephone and text message, which is currently on the rise both in Sweden and internationally. There are a few things to keep in mind to reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

Meet Nick Tobin, lecturer, principal researcher and docent at the Department of Oncology and Pathology at KI. Nick teaches in the subject area of Bioinformatics, but also runs seminars on various aspects of cancer including its hallmarks and the utility of cancer gene expression signatures in a clinical setting. Nick is one of Clinicum's advisors within Bioinformatics.

KI has signed an agreement with the Public Health Agency of Sweden that enables the lending of personnel between the authorities. Personnel loans (secondments) can be utilised both during peacetime crises and in normal situations to assist each other when there is a temporary need for specific expertise.

Monday, September 1st, was the opening of the new temporary micro area in BZ, where students can heat their food and store it in a refrigerator on site.

On 26 September, around 2500 high school students from the Stockholm area visited the science festival Researchers' Night (Forskarfredag) at Albanova. Many researchers from KI participated in the programme, including the Science fair and the Researchers' Grand Prix. The event is a collaboration between KI, KTH, Stockholm University, the City of Stockholm and Vetenskapens hus. The initiative is part of the EU's Researchers' Night celebrating science across Europe.

Karolinska Institutet hereby announces research grants for studies on the common disease osteoporosis, funded by a donation from Ebbe and Lena Krook. A total of SEK 5 million for 2025.

President Annika Östman Wernerson has taken decisions on further aspects of KI’s new model for the allocation of the government appropriation for research and doctoral education. The decisions concern performance-bases allocations and premises costs. The model will come into effect in its entirety in 2026, replacing the former “activity” model.

This year’s draft budget has landed. For the higher education sector, we can see that the government is signalling a greater focus on excellence and competitiveness. In it, it is proposed that five per cent of the direct research appropriation be divided among universities based on excellence. There is also a general SEK 172.6 million increase in the appropriation, of which KI receives an extra SEK 20.5 million.

On Thursday, September 25th, starting after 7:00 PM, an update will be carried out on ki.se, including medarbetare.ki.se, nyheter.ki.se, and utbildning.ki.se. During the update, some downtime may occur, and it will not be possible to log in or work in the web publishing system.

Karolinska Institutet now has its own institutional repository for the dissemination and long-term preservation of research data – the KI Data Repository. The Data Access Unit at the University Library is the support function that manages and provides support in matters concerning the use of the service.

KI, together with Stockholm University and KTH, offers two awards of 30,000 SEK each for lab visits or joint projects to strengthen research collaboration with the University of Tokyo in Japan.

The salary review for 2025 is now underway and dialogues are ongoing in various forums within the organisation. The University Management has discussed the annual salary statistics and information about the recruitment situation, which shows that KI has a relatively low salary for Postdocs and Assistant professors compared to other higher education institutions.

Adolescent mental health took the spotlight at Karolinska Institutet earlier this month, where global experts, youth leaders, and policymakers gathered to launch the second Lancet Commission on Adolescent Health and Wellbeing. The event highlighted the urgent need for cross-sector collaboration and youth engagement to address the growing challenges facing adolescents today.

During a webinar on 17 September, the university management presented the principles of the proposed new model and answered questions.

Lazare Ntirenganya successfully passed his ISP review at Karolinska Institutet on 17 September. With a background in pharmacy and public health methodology, his doctoral research focuses on drug safety and interactions in the treatment of parasitic infections among school-aged children in Rwanda. Building on years of experience from the PROFORMA project, his work aims to improve the effectiveness and safety of mass drug administration programs.

Karolinska Institutet is recruiting three Assistant Professors in two programs tied to SciLifeLab. SciLifeLab and DDLS Fellows (Assistant Professors) are six-year positions with generous recruitment packages. The successful candidates are employed by Karolinska Institutet and affiliated with SciLifeLab. Deadline for applications is November 15th, 2025.

This fall, University Alliance Stockholm Trio is organising webinars on ethics, where the first is about self-plagiarism and the second about authorship dilemmas.

Two new framework agreements for gas will start on October 1 and will be visible in the agreement catalog from that date. One framework agreement is already valid since February.

With the new KI RIMS report Biosketch, KI researchers can quickly produce a summary with a photo and short biography based on their profile page. The need for a uniform and easily accessible short CV has been highlighted by the International Relations Office, which often shares researcher profiles in connection with international visits and collaborations. The hope is that the biosketch report will simplify the work of both researchers and international coordinators.

KI RIMS, KI's research information system, now contains two reports designed to make it easier to find researchers at a certain academic level within a specific subject area. The first is the report "Degrees of Licentiate/Doctor", which lists all active researchers at KI who have completed a doctoral or licentiate degree. The second is the previously available docent report, which has now been expanded to include professors and is called "Docents and Professors at KI".

This autumn, we’re welcoming the first group of students to our new two-year Master’s Programme in Global Health. This vibrant group of 40 students come from over 20 countries, spanning almost all continents, and a range of backgrounds—law, political science, anthropology, public affairs, medicine, public health, nursing, and more.

The Department of Global Public Health hosted the annual Welcome Day for new students on Wednesday 3 September.

Karolinska Institutet offers all employees fire safety training, that includes both theoretical and practical content. The fire safety training is mandatory for all KI staff and must be undertaken within 6 months from employment, and then repeated every 4:th years.
