On November 9, 2022, the Committee for Research at Karolinska Institutet decided on the allocation of funding for positions as Assistant Professor, Senior Research Specialist/Principal Researcher and Consolidator grants for researchers already employed by KI. Immune cells in ALS patients can predict the course of the disease By measuring immune cells in the cerebrospinal fluid when diagnosing ALS, it is possible to predict how fast the disease may progress according to a study from Karolinska Institutet published in Nature Communications.

Three KI researchers are awarded the 2022 ERC StGDavid Marlevi, Enric Llorens and Onur Dagliyan have been awarded the 2022 ERC Starting Grant. Their projects concern multiscale imaging for cardiovascular diseases, self-repairing injured tissues in mammals and new molecular technology for cellular circuits.

Move to new unified web pages for KI’s core facilities beginsCore facilities with funding from the Infrastructure Council will be easier to find for users. This is the purpose behind the project Digital profiling of KI’s core facilities, which began in spring 2022. Implementation of new, uniform templates for the facilities’ web pages on ki.se and in the booking system iLab is now underway.

Noma Awarness Event- A Disease That Shouldn’t Exist AnymoreEvery year an estimated 140,000 new cases of the disease noma are reported and of the people effected approximately 90% die. Still most people have never heard of this preventable and in early stages treatable disease. That is why MSF Sweden, in partnership with Karolinska Institutet and the Swedish Society of Medicine organized an event to increase awareness on noma. The award-winning documentary "Restoring Dignity " was shown followed by a panelist discussion including two noma survivors.

Researchers may have found a new biomarker for acute COVID-19 Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have shown that patients with acute COVID-19 infection have increased levels of the cytokine IL-26 in their blood. Moreover, high IL-26 levels correlate with an exaggerated inflammatory response that signifies severe cases of the disease. The findings, which are presented in Frontiers in Immunology, indicate that IL-26 is a potential biomarker for severe COVID-19.

The ADHD medication lisdexamfetamine was associated with the lowest risk of hospitalisation and death in people with amphetamine addiction, when medications generally used among persons with substance use disorders were compared. This is shown in a large registry-based study by researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden in collaboration with the University of Eastern Finland and Niuvanniemi Hospital, published in JAMA Psychiatry.

It brings up various circumstances that may be important for why this is so, such as hormones, environment, expectations, as well as the tendency to seek help for mental health problems. Researchers at Karolinska Institutet participated as experts regarding these various factors.

The widely used gene scissor (CRISPR/Cas) can modify the genetic content in cells to study the molecular roles of genes and has gained great clinical relevance in gene therapy to treat genetic diseases. A new study performed by Claudia Kutter’s research group at the Department of Microbiology, Cell, and Tumor Biology at Karolinska Institutet, found that the gene scissor leads to unexpected genomic changes.
