Intensive Training of Trainers course on clinical trials held at the University of Rwanda

Professor Aklillu recently led a two-week training program on clinical trial fundamentals at the University of Rwanda. The initiative gathered senior researchers and specialists to strengthen clinical research in the region, marking a key step in advancing ethical and effective trials across Africa.
On the 3rd to 14th of March 2025, Professor Eleni Aklillu, group leader of the GH-Pharma research group, led an intensive two-week Training of Trainers course on the Fundamentals of Clinical Trials at the University of Rwanda. The program was coordinated by Karolinska Institutet in collaboration with Addis Ababa University - CDT Africa and funded by Sanofi and the International Vaccine Institute (IVI).
The course was officially opened by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Rwanda, and brought together senior scientists, specialist doctors, and researchers for in-depth discussions on advancing clinical research. As part of the Regional Drug Development and Equitable Health Initiative, the program provided participants with comprehensive knowledge of clinical trial methodologies, ethical considerations, and regulatory frameworks.
The event also gained attention in the Rwanda media and was featured on national television news (minutes 18:00-21:30 in the video).
“It was an honor to engage with participants, share insights on national TV about the training’s impact, and contribute to strengthening clinical research capacity. I’m grateful for the knowledge gained and the meaningful connections made,“ Professor Aklillu shared, reflecting on the experience.
This initiative underscores a strong commitment to enhancing clinical research expertise in Africa, fostering collaboration, and promoting ethical and effective clinical trials.
