Webinar series: Health Literacy for researchers

NVS-PUF V, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, welcomes all doctoral students and researchers at KI, and other interested parties, to a webinar series focusing on Health Literacy. The webinars will consist of lectures and discussions between lecturers and participants, and some self-studies will be conducted prior each webinar. In English, and certificate of participation possible.

Program:


6 Sept 10-12*: Introduction to Health Literacy

Presentation of different definitions, dimensions and
models of health literacy and what influences and is
influenced by health literacy. Information on how health
literacy can be assessed, promoted and addressed will
be provided as well.


13 Sept 10-12*: Health literacy assessment

Different instruments for assessing health literacy at the
individual and organizational level will be presented, as
well as how they can be translated, culturally adapted
and validated. What to consider when choosing an
instrument will also be highlighted.


27 Sept 13-15*: Health literacy & quantitative research

Presentations and discussions on health literacy studies
with cross-sectional and experimental design. Briefing on
national and international health literacy networks and
resources.


4 Oct 10-12*: Health literacy & qualitative research

Presentation and dialogue on health literacy research
using inductive and deductive qualitative study design.
Review of research considerations (from planning to
dissemination of results) when involving a study
population with a different mother tongue and cultural
background than your own

Speakers:


Josefin Wångdahl, MSc Public Health, PhD. Assistant Professor at Aging Research Center, Karolinska institutet and Stockholm University, and at the Division of Nursing, NVS, Karolinska institutet, Sweden. 

Swedish research representative in the European WHO supporterd Health Literacy Network (M-POHL), member of the Research Standards Committee of the International Health Literacy Association (IHLA), and manager for the Swedish Health
Literacy Network and the Swedish webbpage on health literacy: www.halsolitteracitet.se. She will contribute to all four webinars.


Hanne Søberg Finbråten, RN, PhD, and associate professor at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences, Norway. 

She is active in national and international networks for research in health literacy. Her research in health literacy has primarily focused on evaluating the psychometric properties of instruments for measuring health literacy, mapping health literacy among people with diabetes, and the general population. She is PI for the Norwegian M-POHL project on OHL assessments in hospitals. She will contribute with her knowledge and experience in webinar 2.
 

Maria Jaensson, PhD, Associate professor, registered nurse anesthetist,
senior lecturer and excellent teaching practitioner at Örebro University
Sweden. 

Research leader for the group Perioperative care and Pedagogical Processes (PEPP) - Örebro University (oru.se) and member in the Swedish Health Literacy Network. She will talk about her research on the impact of
health literacy on post-operative recovery (webinar 3).


Anna Sjöström, PhD, district nurse and lecturer at the Department of Nursing,
Umeå University, Sweden. 

Her research area is health literacy in primary care. She will share her experiences in translating, validating and using the eHealth Literacy Questionnaire (eHLQ) in Sweden (webinar 2).


Annika Grynne, MSc Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Doctoralstudent in Health
and Welfare at Jönköping University, Sweden. 

Her research area is digital technology. She will present a qualitative thematic deductive study in which she used the integrated model of health literacy (webinar 4). The study explored how women diagnosed with breast cancer access, understand, appraise, and apply health information through a digital information tool before, during, and after radiation therapy treatmen
