The agreement with the occupational health service Avonova is now finalised and valid from October 1, 2024, to October, 1 2028, with the possibility of two extensions of two years each. For questions about the agreement, please contact Ia G Wallgren at the central HR Office.

During the month of December, food waste management will be introduced in all of KI's buildings. When the food waste is sorted out from other waste, it can be recovered and used as, for example, biogas and biofertilizers. It reduces the burden on the environment and contributes to sustainable development. This has been mandatory for all households and businesses in Sweden since 1 January 2024.

The WHO has classified the ongoing outbreak of Mpox as an international health emergency. Mpox is caused by a DNA virus belonging to the Ortho poxvirus. Mpox is divided into two types: clade 1 and clade 2. So far, there has been one case of clad 1 in Sweden. The WHO considers the risk of widespread infection in Europe to be low.

In the wake of the green transition, new risks are emerging in people's work environments, says Karin Broberg, professor at the Institute of Environmental Medicine at Karolinska Institutet. "It goes very quickly from a pilot to being scaled up to become the next generation of fuel or to become the next plant for how to recycle plastic," she says. At the end of the year, her research team will publish a study on the work environment in Sweden for those involved in recycling metals.

CLINTEC and Heart lab. will move lab/staff/PI:s to floor 7 in the end of week 8/beginning of week 9.
The administration of BioNut has moved to temporary locations on floor 8. The KI president and the Neo manager will also move to temporary places on floor 8 in the end of February. In April, when floor 8 has been rebuilt and MedH administrative staff has moved in, a final move will take place.

The adoption of the hybrid work model in the KI administration led to better health and less stress for the staff, according to a recent study. The research project, which looked into the effects of the more flexible approach that was taken during the COVID-19 pandemic, provides valuable insights that will inform the development of new workplace models for the future at KI.

The Single Cell Core Facility of Flemingsberg Campus (SICOF) moves to level 6 in Neo, the lab next to BEA. The move of SICOF closer to BEA will benefit both core facilities, as they collaborate on different projects and share equipment.

Starting next year, all employees of Karolinska Institutet will be entitled to a higher wellness allowance. The wellness allowance is a tax-free grant that staff can use for different kinds of exercise and is set to be increased from SEK 1,500 to SEK 3,000 per year.

In autumn 2022, KI students had the opportunity to answer a survey about their experiences of and risks of discrimination and harassment. The results point to the need for more knowledge and active measures linked to lack of accessibility, discrimination and harassment in the study environment. This applies in particular to ethnicity and gender in connection with On-site training (VFU/VIL). KI is now working to strengthen its work with equal opportunities for all students.
