During the month of December, food waste management will be introduced in all of KI's buildings. When the food waste is sorted out from other waste, it can be recovered and used as, for example, biogas and biofertilizers. It reduces the burden on the environment and contributes to sustainable development. This has been mandatory for all households and businesses in Sweden since 1 January 2024.

During the autumn of 2023, a pilot was carried out with the food waste management in Adminhuset and Aula Medica on Campus Solna. The cleaning company Städgladen managed the handling and after that the sorting in these buildings has continued during 2024.

Städgladen will now handle the food waste in all of KI's buildings. They collect food waste bags daily from the kitchenettes, lunchrooms and public areas and leave them in garbage rooms where they are picked up by a waste contractor. Employees and students are responsible for sorting food waste correctly.

The property and facilities office will initially bear the costs.

Tips on sorting food waste

  • Food waste containers and labelling (according to Avfall Sveriges common symbol system for waste) will be placed by the kitchenettes, lunchrooms and public areas.
  • Look for the symbol according to the adjacent picture to find the closest food waste collection (the sign system will gradually be introduced throughout KI).
  • Some examples of what can and cannot be sorted as food waste:

YES to food scraps, fruit peels, coffee filters/sumps, tea bags, kitchen paper and uncoloured napkins.

NO to chewing gum, snuff, colored napkins, flowers/plants and coffee capsules.

This information is available digitally, and will be set up by the food waste sorting station (if there is space).
