The Pediatric Research Foundation at Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital has awarded grants to 18 PhD students at Karolinska Institutet – the highest number ever. The research focuses on diseases and conditions in children that often do not receive much attention.

Research into children requires dedicated studies and dedicated resources. Children are not just small adults, and what works medically for an adult does not always apply to a child. This is the guiding principle of The Pediatric Research Foundation at Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital, which twice a year awards grants to researchers working on issues relating to sick children.

At the spring award ceremony, held at Karolinska University Hospital, 18 PhD students were awarded grants. This is more than on any previous occasion.

“We prioritise areas that do not always receive much attention. This means that good research is being carried out in these less mainstream areas, and that is important for sick children and their families,” says Anne-Charlotte Knutsson, a board member of the foundation.

Close to clinical practice

A central principle underpinning the foundation’s work is that research should be firmly rooted in actual clinical practice. The researchers who receive grants often work in clinical settings and identify needs in their day-to-day work which they then incorporate into their research. The findings are intended to be directly applicable in clinical practice.

The Foundation focuses its support primarily on younger researchers at the start of their careers. The 18 grant recipients are PhD students at Karolinska Institutet, and their projects span a broad spectrum of paediatric medicine.

– We often award grants to younger researchers who are at the start of their research careers, which gives new research an extra boost, says Anne-Charlotte

Looking ahead

The foundation issues calls for applications twice a year, and ahead of this autumn’s round, it is hoping for continued strong interest.

“We hope that awareness of our foundation will grow so that we receive even more qualified applicants,” says Anne-Charlotte Knutsson.
