New guidelines to support the allocation of KI’s research funding
KI’s resource allocation model for research funding continues to evolve. The President has issued guidelines to support the work on prioritisation, allocation and monitoring within the campus groups. The first announcements regarding the 2027 allocation are expected shortly.

The model began to take shape in 2024 as part of KI’s priority focus areas. Ahead of 2027, the various parts of the model will be implemented in their entirety for the first time. The President has therefore issued guidelines to support the work of allocating and monitoring the model at various levels within the organisation.
Clearer responsibilities within the organisation
"The model we have introduced clarifies responsibilities and roles for the allocation of research funding within our organisation. The most important thing now is that we use the model as intended: through forward-looking dialogues that lead to clear priorities set by the university management, in the campus groups and at the departments,” says President Annika Östman Wernerson.
The President and the deans are responsible for the base funding, whilst the Faculty Board is responsible for the performance-based part. This responsibility includes monitoring and making adjustments for the coming years if necessary. The guidelines provide support for taking the work forward in collaboration with the departments.
The guidelines highlight KI’s new operational planning process as an important opportunity for dialogue and follow-up within both the Faculty Board and management teams at various levels. Other changes are also helping to strengthen and clarify the governance of KI, not least the preparations for new deans, deputy deans and faculty members taking up their ppsitions on 1 July. There is also an ongoing initiative for management team development at many different levels within KI, which is also in line with KI’s priority focus areas.
Allocation for 2027 to be announced before the summer
The Faculty Board is currently working on adjusting the indicators in the performance-based part (external grants and bibliometrics), where faculty members and Heads of Department have submitted various comments and proposals. Once the indicators have been finalised, an initial allocation of the research grant for 2027 will be announced.
“Our aim is for the campus groups and departments to receive initial notification of the majority of their allocation for 2027 as early as June, so that planning for next year’s activities can begin in good time for the necessary discussions and deliberations,” says Annika Östman Wernerson.
During the autumn, preparations on the budget for the research grant as a whole will continue, and a decision on the further allocation of funds is expected then.
About KI’s model for the allocation of research funding
The research grant is to be used to conduct research and postgraduate education of the highest quality with efficient use of resources. KI’s model for the allocation of the grant is based, among other things, on:
- base funding for long-term planning within the campus groups’ management teams under the Deans, decided upon and monitored by the President.
- performance-based allocation based on indicators relating to external grants and bibliometrics, decided upon and monitored by the Faculty Board.

Fact box: KI’s total turnover
SEK 8.7 billion for 2025
The research grant usually accounts for between 20 and 25 per cent of KI’s total turnover.
In 2026, a base grant and performance-based allocation were introduced for the first time, totalling SEK 750 million
This can be compared with the total allocation under the previous activity-based model, which amounted to SEK 476 million (2024).
The majority of KI’s income comes from external grants, but the education grant and other operating income are also significant. Read more in KI’s Financial Report for 2025.
