Three new research collaborations between Stockholm and Tokyo receive funding
Three projects have been awarded funding as part of the collaboration between the Stockholm Trio and the University of Tokyo. One of the projects is led by researchers at Karolinska Institutet, and all three involve participation from KI.
The aim of the funding is to initiate new collaborations or strengthen existing partnerships between Karolinska Institutet, KTH, Stockholm University and the University of Tokyo. The projects will also lay the foundations for future international research applications.
One of the approved projects is led by Janina Seubert, Associate Professor at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet. Together with researchers from the four universities, she will investigate how smell, taste and visual impressions influence the experience of food in virtual reality. Through workshops and research exchanges, the group will develop common methods and collect pilot data in preparation for future international initiatives.
The other two projects focus on how sensory impressions in virtual environments influence people’s experiences, and on how Japanese researchers can receive better support in navigating Swedish academic culture. Researchers from Karolinska Institutet are also participating in these collaborations.
The three projects were selected from among 14 applications submitted in response to the 2026 call for proposals.
