KI and Akademiska Hus deepen their partnership for a sustainable campus

Akademiska Hus and KI have long cooperated on issues concerning sustainability on campus, a partnership that has now been deepened by the signing of a new sustainability agreement. The agreement contains a cooperation model with regular follow-ups and opportunities for staff and students to become involved, creating more favourable conditions for lasting, systematic sustainability efforts.
The agreement covers all KI premises in Solna and Flemingsberg owned by Akademiska Hus and clarifies how we can work more efficiently together towards ecological, social and economic sustainability. Efforts will be led by a common sustainability group and the results will be reported regularly.
"We see sustainability as a strategically important part of our property management and campus development,” says Caroline Arehult at Akademiska Hus. “This agreement gives us and Karolinska Institutet a shared platform for advancing sustainability with clear goals, structures and activities.”
The partnership is based on each party’s own environment and sustainability targets, with KI’s position on the national Climate Framework and Akademiska Hus’s net-zero goal by 2040 being crucial starting points.
The focus is on six strategic collaborative goals:
- To strengthen the partnership and systematise our joint sustainability efforts.
- To reduce the energy consumed by our operations and properties.
- To streamline the use and coordination of premises to meet current and future needs without compromising social values.
- To reduce waste and increase re-use.
- To promote sustainable mobility solutions in, to and from the campuses.
- To further develop and strengthen equality and security, and to promote health on our campuses.
“Our environment and sustainability efforts concern all of us,” says Annika Östman Wernerson, President of Karolinska Institutet. “Our now deeper partnership with Akademiska Hus is one step on the way towards making our campuses sustainable in the long term from both an environmental and a social perspective, which is also one of the goals of KI’s Strategy 2030.”
The agreement marks a shared ambition to make sustainability a natural and vibrant part of campus development.
