Expression of interest – KI is seeking scientific ombudsmen
Karolinska Institutet (KI) announces three positions as scientific ombudsmen (vetenskapliga ombud), starting 1 January 2026. The assignment is an important part of KI’s efforts to promote good research practice, research ethics, and responsible research conduct.
About the assignment
The scientific ombudsman serves as an advisory and impartial function with the following responsibilities:
- Provide support and guidance on matters related to good research practice, research ethics, and responsibility in research collaborations.
- Contribute to preventive efforts by disseminating knowledge about relevant regulations, guidelines, and ethical codes.
- Support researchers on issues related to responsible internationalisation and external relations.
- Be available to researchers, doctoral students, and other KI employees.
- Collaborate with other functions within KI, such as legal affairs, ethical review, and HR.
- Participate in the Committee for ethics and good research practice, once established.
The assignment is given by KI’s president and is independent of organisational affiliation. Collegial trust constitutes a cornerstone of the role. The scientific ombudsman shall report annually on their activities to the president and the Faculty Board.
Who are we looking for?
We are seeking individuals who:
- Have strong commitment, solid experience, and sound knowledge of research and research ethics.
- Have experience from research activities where issues of scientific integrity, ethical considerations, and collegial responsibility have been central.
- Have the ability to communicate complex ethical and legal matters in an accessible manner.
- Possess strong advisory skills in complex ethical questions and can clearly and effectively communicate relevant regulations and guidelines.
- Enjoy collegial trust and are motivated to contribute to a positive research culture within the university.
- Are attentive, diplomatic, impartial, and have high integrity.
The assignment is for a fixed term of three years, with the possibility of extension. The position corresponds to approximately 15–20 percent of full-time employment. Compensation is provided in the form of departmental reimbursement (IK).
