On 28 April, more than 400 participants gathered for Doctoral Education Day at Aula Medica in Solna. The day attracted doctoral students and supervisors, with representation from across KI as well as international participants.

The participants consisted largely of doctoral students, but supervisors, researchers, directors of studies and administrative staff were also in attendance at the first Doctoral Education Day. All departments at KI were represented, as were participants from other universities and organisations.

“This demonstrates broad engagement from several different functions within doctoral education and a big interest for the attendees to learn valuable skills,” says Robert Harris, academic vice president of doctoral education.

The programme offered a wide range of inspiration, practical tools and reflection about the conditions and opportunities within doctoral education. It featured lectures on topics including open science, time management and career development, as well as panel discussions and debates on various perspectives within research.

New perspectives and exchanging experiences

Many participants highlighted the value of gaining new perspectives and exchanging experiences with others in doctoral education. The combination of practical tools and opportunities for dialogue and networking proved to be a successful format for the day. A recurring theme in evaluations of the day was the significant benefits gained from ‘time management’, efficiency, planning and motivation, but also more overarching values such as inspiration, hope and networking.
