UKÄ approves KI's actions regarding nursing education
Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) is satisfied with KI’s action report, following the thematic evaluation of the nursing programs, and considers the measures implemented by KI to be reasonable and appropriate.
During 2022–2023, UKÄ conducted a thematic evaluation of all nursing programs at Swedish institutions for higher education. The evaluation focused on how the design of the program can enhance students’ nursing skills and abilities, as well as the conditions related to competence supply, supervisor training, and clinical placements.
After the evaluation, all institutions received improvement proposals, categorized into “may” and “should” recommendations. In the follow-up, institutions were asked to report on actions taken in response to the “should”-recommendations. Reporting of “may”-recommendations was voluntary.
The assessment group's statement
Regarding KI’s action reporting, the assessment group provided the following statement:
“The institution’s actions as reported in the follow-up report are deemed reasonable and appropriate, with respect to the should-recommendations. Overall, the assessment group believes that the should-recommendations have been taken into account in the institution’s efforts to help students achieve skills and abilities.”
Of the 24 institutions that were followed up on, 23 received a positive assessment. One institution has been encouraged to take further measures.
Valuable process for KI
According to Kristina Gottberg, senior lecturer and Program Director for the Nursing Program, the process of the thematic evaluation has been highly valuable for KI.
– The process has enlighteningly highlighted important areas for quality improvement regarding students’ skills and abilities.
She also believes that the evaluation demonstrates that the quality of the education is good.
– Participation in the evaluation has confirmed important quality aspects that constitute strengths, such as collaboration models, pedagogical and academic competence, and the organization of education. She continues:
– The evaluation has also provided several opportunities for valuable collaboration and experience exchange with other higher education institutions in Sweden. The results are important to our on-going development of a new curriculum for 2026.
