KI's educational programs remain popular
At midnight on April 19, the national application for university studies for the autumn semester 2022 closed. At that time, more than 22,000 had applied for Karolinska Institutet's undergraduate programmes. The most popular is the medical program followed by the undergraduate programmes in psychology, dentistry, and nursing.
With its high proportion of first-choice applicants, the medical programme at KI is the most popular programme in the country. It ranks slightly above the law programs at Stockholm and Lund University, respectively, which ends up in second and third place.
– We are proud and happy to be so popular! We have a high-quality education with engaged teachers, a close collaboration with health care services and a strong research connection that I believe attracts, in addition to the location in the capital, says Marie Dahlin, Program Director of the medical program at Karolinska Institutet.
Several other programmes at KI are at the top in terms of the number of first-choice applicants. Among others, the dentistry programme, which also ranks high on international ranking lists.
This year's number of applicants to KI is, however, lower than last year. This is also a national trend. The total number of applicants to Swedish universities decreased since last year from 419,097 to 376,665, which is a decrease of 10 percent. At KI, the number of applicants has decreased by 13 percent since last year.
– We can see a reduction in comparison with the application for the autumn semster-21. We have had a clear corona effect with many applicants for our educational programmes. This year, that effect has decreased, and we are starting to return to more normal levels of applications. The search pressure is now similar to the level that we saw in autumn of 2020, says Victoria Rosander, acting Head of Unit for the unit for admission, degree and dissertation at KI.
