Students explore neuroscience at Flemingsberg and AlbaNova

In September, lower and upper secondary students took part in two outreach events at Flemingsberg Campus (September 18th) and AlbaNova (September 25th). Participants learned about brain research conducted at Karolinska Institutet, while explored interactive stations.

Life science day at Flemingsberg

On 18 September, the Life Science Cluster Flemingsberg held an open day at the Novum research park for around 200 students in grades 6 to 9 from Huddinge and Botkyrka. StratNeuro and NeurotechEU ran a neuroscience station with interactive and hands-on activities where students learned how neurons communicate, looked at neurons under the microscope and used electrical signals from their own muscles to move a mechanical claw or control a partner’s movements.

SVT reported on this initiative and spoke with some participants. Watch the video report here (in Swedish).

Researchers’ Friday (Forskarfredag) at AlbaNova

On 25 September, Researchers’ Friday (ForskarFredag) celebrated its 20th anniversary at AlbaNova University Centre and at other locations across Sweden. Under the theme “The Future Mission”, around 2,000 upper secondary school students took part in hands-on activities and met researchers.

StratNeuro, NeurotechEU and StratRegen ran a joint science station with interactive activities and science demonstrations. Students could test their precision and speed in a pipetting competition, use electrical signals from their own muscles to move a mechanical claw or control a partner’s movements, or look at neurons under the microscope

Researchers’ Friday is part of the EU’s Researchers’ Night, which takes place across Europe during the last week of September.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who participated in these outreach events, we would have not made it without you!
