His research focuses on how advanced mass spectrometry and integrative modeling can be used to study the body's molecular responses to disease and environmental stress. The goal is to increase understanding of the biochemical processes that drive disease development and to identify biological markers that can be used to detect and follow disease progression.

Craig Wheelock is also director of the KI Small Molecule Mass Spectrometry Core Facility (KI-SMMS), a nationally leading research infrastructure for mass spectrometry and molecular analysis.

The operations are affiliated with the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM), where the research contributes to increased understanding of how diseases and environmental factors affect human biology at the molecular level.

“I am deeply honored to serve as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, an institution whose commitment to transforming human health aligns so closely with our mission to decode the molecular complexity of disease, says Craig Wheelock. Through the power of metabolomics and mass spectrometry, I believe we stand at a remarkable inflection point — one where the chemical signatures written in our biology can finally guide us toward truly personalized medicine."
