As Maria Hagströmer leaves her role as Departmental Director of Education (GUA) and takes up the position of Deputy Dean for the Committee for Higher Education, Anna Pettersson takes the helm as NVS’s new GUA. Sofia Vikström and Jeanette Eckerblad will serve as deputy/acting GUA.

What is your experience in education?

”My involvement goes a long way back. I became engaged in educational matters after completing my PhD in 2005, when I moved from clinical work to teaching. That interest eventually led to a Master’s degree in medical education. Since then, I have held roles and assignments in educational leadership, research on learning and education, and various expert tasks within education. Between 2018 and 2025, I was Programme Director for the Study Programme of Physiotherapy, says Anna Pettersson.”

Did you need time to consider before accepting the assignment?

”Yes, it is a major and important responsibility, and even though I am committed and interested, it was something I needed to think through.”

What plans and visions do you have as the new GUA?

”NVS is a large department where programmes and divisions have different conditions and different challenges, but what we have in common is working towards high‑quality education where students are given the conditions to learn to think independently and critically, and are given tools to actively build their understanding within their field. I also hope that we can learn from and support one another in striving towards that goal.”

What will be the most enjoyable part of this assignment?

”Learning and developing, and feeling that we are doing something important and meaningful together.”

How long have you been deputy/acting GUA?

”I have been deputy/acting GUA at NVS since 2018, with a break for a STINT fellowship exchange at Arizona State University.”

Was it an obvious choice for you to continue with this assignment? What motivates you to work with this?

”I am very pleased to continue in the deputy/acting GUA role in a new GUA constellation. We share similar overarching visions, and our different areas of expertise and interests complement each other. What motivates me is the desire to help create high-quality education that meets the needs and requirements of governing bodies as well as of students and colleagues in education.”

What are you most looking forward to in this assignment?

”Among other things, to work together to identify development potential in our efforts to promote students’ study environment. We also face a transformative period regarding the offering and organisation of freestanding courses. External requests, including for short courses for the region’s employees, are other interesting areas to develop and manage. But above all, I look forward to, together with Anna and Jeanette, leading and facilitating the work of the knowledgeable, education‑dedicated colleagues within NVS.”

What experience do you have of educational matters?

”I am a specialist nurse in intensive care and have more than 20 years’ experience as a teacher and education coordinator in higher education. Since 2016, I have held a teaching position at the Division of Nursing.

Overall, I have broad experience of pedagogy, educational leadership and quality development, with a focus on strengthening students’ learning and professional competence. I have taught at undergraduate, master’s and doctoral level, and have worked with educational development. I have taken a particular interest in problem‑based learning, focusing on student‑centred and interprofessional learning.”

Was it an obvious choice for you to take on this role? What made you say yes?

”Yes, absolutely. What appealed to me was the opportunity to combine my interest in education, quality development and leadership. I appreciate roles where I can work strategically with others to develop programmes and create good conditions for students’ learning.”

What are you most looking forward to in this role?

”Above all, I look forward to working with programme-wide issues and creating new collaborations. I find it particularly stimulating to work on matters that contribute to long-term development and quality in education.”
