Labmed awarded funding to strengthen the connection between education and research

On 23 October 2025, the Faculty Board decided to grant the Study Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Science at the Department of Laboratory Medicine four doctoral student fundings and four research grants as part of the initiative to strengthen the connection between education and research.
The research funding amounts to SEK 1.5 million over three years. The doctoral student funding covers 75 percent of a PhD position for four years.
The Departmental Director of Education (GUA) comments on the significance of the initiative:

“This initiative further strengthens the ties between education and research and creates new opportunities for collaboration,” says Lars Frelin, Departmental Director of Education at the Department of Laboratory Medicine.
“It is an important step to provide our students with an education of the highest quality while also advancing research within the program’s main field – biomedical laboratory science.”

Why this initiative is needed
Close interaction between education and research is essential for the university’s activities; one cannot function without the other. While there are environments with strong ties to both education and research across all departments at KI, close collaboration between them is not always present. The Faculty Board therefore decided to announce funding to promote a fruitful connection between environments with strong research links and those with strong educational links.
