“It is with great dismay that I’ve been following the news about this horrific act,” says KI President Annika Östman Wernerson. “My thoughts go, of course, to the victims and their families. My colleagues in the university management and I had a meeting about the tragedy shortly after it happened, and I’ve also met some of my fellow rectors to discuss it with them, as well.”

“I understand that the shooting has left many people, including us at KI, feeling worried and confused,” she continues. “We have recently decided on a new crisis plan for the university and will be stepping up our contingency measures and our preparations for dealing with serious incidents such as this. Yesterday’s shooting shows, I regret to say, that this is absolutely necessary.”

Established procedures and guards on campus

Procedures are in place at KI for how to respond should a serious incident occur on the KI campuses.

“If a similar incident to that in Örebro was to happen at KI, it’s essential that you first get yourself out of harm’s way. Then you’re to raise the alarm as soon as you can,” says Magnus Håkansson, chief security officer at KI.

Security staff and guards patrol both campuses 24 hours a day.

“This means that there are trained people on site able to handle threats and violence,” he continues. “They patrol the campuses and can act instantly. They’re also able to alert the police very promptly.”

KI’s security unit also monitors the wider social environment and has regular contact with the police and security service to quickly obtain information regarding any indications of external threats to KI.

Support in a crisis

If you’re an employee of KI, you’re entitled to support in the event of a crisis. Contact your line manager or your departmental head of HR. If you’re a student, contact your course coordinator or the student wellbeing centre

In the event of major crises such as serious accidents or threats, natural disasters and fires, KI’s crisis organisation will step in.
