Equal opportunities in focus during Pride week
As in previous years, several of Stockholm’s higher education institutions are participating under the joint Academic Pride banner to draw attention to LGBTQI-related issues. Academic Pride 2021 arranges a seminar on breaking binary gender norms with language as well as social events for students. The Pride flag will be hoisted at all participating schools throughout the festival program, including KI’s campuses in Flemingsberg and Solna.
“Bringing together several of Stockholm’s higher education institutions and their associated student unions through Academic Pride, to draw attention to LGBTQI-related issues, is vital," says Vice President Anders Gustafsson, who is responsible for issues related to equal opportunities at KI. "We have a great responsibility stay focused on these issues, both in terms of study and work environment. It is important that we, as a prominent research institute, integrate knowledge about equal rights in the content of education and research. This is something we work with in our regular operations and something that increasingly permeates and characterizes our entire organization."
Seminar on breaking binary gender norms with language
This year's Academic Pride seminar explores perceptions of inclusive language and how the new personal pronoun "hen" has influenced Swedish speakers' understanding of gender. The seminar is based on current research, and features researchers Elli van Berlekom from Stockholm University and Amanda Klysing from Lund University. The seminar will be held in English and takes place on Thursday 5 August, between 12:30-13:15.

Participation in Pride is arranged together with the student unions of the various schools, including Medicinska Föreningen’s LGBTQ association Queerolinska at Karolinska Institutet, the Rainbows association at Stockholm University (an association for LGBTQIA+ students), and the Student Association at the Stockholm School of Economics (SASSE).
