Title

Risk Profile, Prognosis and Management of Type 2 Diabetes: The Role of ADHD and ADHD medications

Abstract

Managing health often requires planning and maintaining routines. These skills are particularly relevant both to the prevention of type 2 diabetes and to its management among people with the condition, who need to monitor blood sugar, manage diet and physical activity, attend healthcare visits, and take medications regularly to reduce the risk of complications such as cardiovascular disease. Individuals with ADHD often have difficulties with planning, organization, and impulse control, potentially making these demands more challenging. This thesis therefore examined the association between ADHD and ADHD medication and the risk profile, prognosis, and management of type 2 diabetes, using observational study designs and linked national registers or healthcare databases from Sweden and six other countries.

The findings suggest that individuals with both ADHD and type 2 diabetes may warrant particular attention to cardiometabolic risk factors around diagnosis and mortality risk during follow-up. Overall, the studies found limited evidence of cardiometabolic safety concerns related to ADHD medication. Although, potential risks in specific contexts, including long-term atomoxetine use, ADHD medication use among younger adults with type 2 diabetes, and combining stimulant use with certain cardiometabolic medications, warrant further investigation and may need to be considered when making treatment decisions.
