Annika Östman Wernerson: New resource allocation a tool for shared priorities

The KI Faculty Board and I have now decided on the first allocation of KI’s research grants for 2027, which is to say the basic and performance-based aspects. I would like to stress that it’s highly likely that additional funds will be allocated to the basic and/or performance based parts of the model at a later date.

The new resource-allocation model, which will be applied in full after the turn of the new year 2027 will distribute SEK 600 million kronor with clearer responsibilities at campus and departmental level and a focus on forward-looking priorities. The aim is to create a reliable, robust internal financing system flexible enough to be adapted to any change in circumstances. The new model is designed to promote active responsibility-taking throughout the organisation. I would like to stress that it’s highly likely that additional funds will be allocated to the basic and/or performance based parts of the model at a later date.

The campus management groups are now taking matters further by allocating the basic appropriation on the basis of their own priorities and the continuing allocation of funds to the departments.

Clearer rules for international students are needed

Confusing regulations about and rejected applications for residence permits are leaving many people in academia, particularly international master’s students and their families, feeling deeply worried and anxious. It goes without saying that KI’s students should be able to focus on what’s most important – their studies – and for that to be the case, the conditions defining their status must be clear and predictable, regardless of their country of origin or background.

International students are vital to KI and to Sweden. This is why my academic colleagues and I are holding an active dialogue with politicians on the importance of having unambiguous and generous academic migration regulations. I want our students to know that KI does not take matters lying down and that we are actively engaged in ensuring that Sweden remains a country that welcomes talent, knowledge and skills.

Academic vice presidents bow out

The term of office for our academic vice presidents of the Faculty Board’s three committees has now expired. I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to them, and to the departing faculty and students representatives and all other members of the Faculty Board, all of whom have very much contributed to the strengthening of our university. Amongst many other projects, they have strengthened the research and doctoral education quality systems, established enriching ties between education and research, and actively developed the clinical research schools. Through your devotion, competence and determination, you’ve made a real difference and I’m truly grateful for all your efforts.

A big thanks to all of you

We have achieved a great deal this past academic year. Through your dedication to education, research and administrative support, each and every one of you helps to make KI a better university. It’s soon holiday time and I hope you all get some well-deserved rest and recuperation in whatever way suits you best. As for me, I’m recharging my batteries ahead of the autumn by enjoying some lazy days in my summer place in the Stockholm archipelago, hiking in the mountains and spending time with family and friends. Vice-president Martin Bergö and University Director Veronika Sundström and I would like to thank you all for all your hard work.

But before it’s time to sit back and relax, I’m off to Almedalen, the arena at which academia, politics, industry and society meet and debate. I’m happy to say that KI is well-represented in Visby with researchers ready to share their knowledge, and I look forward to meeting all of you who are taking part!
