From now until 7 December, you have the chance to help shape the future of academic governance at Karolinska Institutet. As a member of staff or a student, you can nominate candidates for the positions of dean and deputy dean (corresponding to the current academic vice presidents) for our three committees for Higher Education, Doctoral Education and Research.

These positions are critical to KI’s development going forward. It is the deans and deputy deans who lead and strengthen the quality of our education and research. By nominating candidateswith the necessary skills and commitment, you help to make sure that KI’s academic governance is robust and representative.

KI draws its strength from participation and transparency. The more of you who take an interest in collegial influence, the greater the chances of having a broad, multifaceted leadership that benefits the entire university. Do you have a colleague who might be suitable for the position? Or maybe you want to take the step yourself. Either way, now is your chance.

Come to our dialogue meetings

Shortly, we are following up on our previous dialogue meetings for matters concerning our everyday working environment at KI. On 1 December in Flemingsberg and 3 December in Solna , Vice President Martin Bergö, University Director Veronika Sundström and I will be once again hosting open dialogue meetings, to which all members of staff are welcome. How can we enhance the collegial spirit and how can we work better together? The purpose of these meetings is to air thoughts, ideas and challenges – and we look forward to meeting you there.

Collaboration and new US contacts

This week, I am in the USA with a KI delegation. We will not only be meeting colleagues at our current partner universities, but also making new contacts. KI has more collaborations in place with the USA than with any other country, and regardless of the country’s current stance on research and education, we need to continue nurturing and growing our contacts there in the interests of knowledge development and of cooperation in the fields of medicine and health.

Heartfelt congratulations to our new doctors

Before we left for the USA, we gathered in Stockholm City Hall on 14 November to honour excellent achievements at this autumn’s conferment ceremony by the 19 jubilee doctors who earned their PhDs in 1975 and the 147 new doctors who have now reached an important milestone in their academic careers. Heartfelt congratulations to you all! Be proud with your work and your devotion to driving medical research forward and improving human health the world over.
