New AI network will support for KI staff and students

The rapid advancement of AI in medical research is increasing the need for coordination. Karolinska Institutet is therefore funding a cross-institutional AI network that brings together researchers, clinicians and experts, coordinates initiatives, and provides support for reliable and clinically relevant AI.
The network will kick off 2027, led by KI’s Centre for AI Innovation (CAII) and connects existing expertise with the support needs identified in a recent needs analysis.
Meet AI expertise
The aim is to create a shared meeting place where AI-active staff across KI collaborate across departmental boundaries, develop research, receive methodological support and regulatory guidance, and coordinate ongoing AI initiatives. Here, for example, basic scientists meet clinicians, engineers meet legal experts, and doctoral students meet professors.
A hub for KI’s AI initiatives
The network will collaborate with and complement existing initiatives, while addressing identified gaps in the current structure.
The Centre has been awarded three years of funding for this work, which forms part of a broader collaborative platform where KI also partners with external organisations, such as industry, healthcare providers, policy makers and other universities, to accelerate the development and use of AI in medical research and healthcare.
