The research network Karolinska Interdisciplinary Network for Qualitative Researchers (KI-QUAL) has been awarded SEK 1 875 000 from KI’s funding programme for interdisciplinary research networks. The funding will be used to further develop the network’s activities and create new opportunities for collaboration among qualitative researchers at Karolinska Institutet.

Researchers from six countries gathered in Stockholm in September for the fifth annual workshop organised by the Social Inequalities in Ageing (SIA) Network. The event brought together junior and senior researchers to discuss ongoing studies, strengthen research collaborations and exchange perspectives on ageing and health.

KI-QUAL has received SEK 1.9 million from KI’s fund for interdisciplinary research networks to strengthen collaboration among qualitative researchers. The funding will support workshops, a conference and a summer school for doctoral students.

The rapid advancement of AI in medical research is increasing the need for coordination. Karolinska Institutet is therefore funding a cross-institutional AI network that brings together researchers, clinicians and experts, coordinates initiatives, and provides support for reliable and clinically relevant AI.

The Social inequalities in ageing network (SIA), led by Neda Agahi and Johan Fritzell, has received a three-year grant from Forte. This is a continuation of a Nordic network involving several leading Nordic researchers and their junior colleagues emanating from the earlier SIA programme. The SIA Network will receive a total of SEK 446,000 over three years.

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have discovered that cells commonly associated with ageing and age-related diseases, known as senescent cells, may play a significant role in chronic pain and potentially headaches. This process has been linked to various conditions, including cancer and heart disease.

In an era marked by extensive migration and uncertain living conditions for refugees and migrants, the mental health of these groups has become an increasingly urgent issue. Despite the growing needs, many do not receive the care they require. To address these challenges, a network for transcultural suicidology was launched last year. The Committee for Research has decided to award grants to 15 networks within the call for funds for interdisciplinary research networks. The aim of the initiative is to strengthen scientific quality and promote collaborations across institutional boundaries.
