PhD student Daniel Bergman Focuses on Improving UTI Detection and AMR Surveillance
On 25 August, Daniel Bergman presented his IPS titled Next-Generation Point-of-Care Diagnostics for Vulnerable Populations: Advancing Urinary Tract Infection Detection and Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance. In this short interview he describes the main focus of his doctoral studies.
Congratulations on a successful ISP seminar! Could you start by telling us a bit about yourself and your academic background?
“My name is Daniel Bergman. I was born and raised in Stockholm. Apart from my doctoral studies I work as a resident in Emergency medicine at Södersjukhuset in Stockholm. I have an academic background in development studies and hold a bachelor’s degree in International Relations (from Stockholm University) prior to my medical studies. I attended med-school at KI, and graduated in 2017. I did my thesis in med-school at Anders Björkmans group on Malaria prevalence in Zanzibar.”

What will be the main focus of your doctoral research, and what inspired you to pursue this area?
“My main focus of research will be in vitro point of care analysis in low- and middle-income countries with a specific focus on Point-of-care tests for UTI’s. I have an almost 20 year long interest in Global Health, but have gotten further in to the field of diagnostics since I started working at the emergency department. Putting global health and diagnostics together was a ‘perfect match’.”
Are there any particular aspects of your project that you're especially excited or passionate about?
“Working interdisciplinary both professionally, scientifically and across borders to possibly get a bigger picture of how something is working.”
What do you personally hope to accomplish through your research, and what impact do you envision it having?
“I hope to bring some knowledge and insights into global use of diagnostic tests for UTI, and to get experience from collaborating across continents. Apart from advancing my scientific skill sets.”
