The Department of Learning, Informatics, Management and Ethics (LIME) was established to serve as a space where medicine meets other fields of science. Now, the spotlight is on LIME’s interdisciplinary approach and unique expertise in a special issue of Socialmedicinskt Tidskrift (translates to Journal of Social Medicine).

Medicine meets other fields of knowledge

To meet the complex challenges of today and tomorrow regarding good and equitable health, medicine needs to engage with other fields of knowledge. The specialisation and fragmentation of modern science need to be complemented by cross-disciplinary collaboration to enable meaningful responses to these complex issues. Practitioners and policymakers have a great need for knowledge, which requires evidence or a sound scientific basis for practice and decision-making.

Interdisciplinary department

The Department of Learning, Informatics, Management and Ethics (LIME) was established in 2002 at Karolinska Institutet to serve as a hub where medicine meets other scientific fields. Through its interdisciplinary nature, LIME possesses unique expertise that combines medicine with economics, education, ethics, statistics, leadership, implementation science and informatics.

LIME themed special issue

There is significant added value in the convergence of medicine with the social sciences, the humanities and technology, which is why the Journal of Social Medicine is publishing a special issue featuring articles on research, education and collaboration, as well as reviews of books and doctoral theses.

"It’s a fantastic way to showcase the breadth of the department. We are a relatively small department but with a unique interdisciplinary approach. Charli Eriksson, senior research specialist at LIME and the National centre for suicide research and prevention (NASP), who has led the work of compiling the material, has done a sterling job with the special issue and really highlighted what makes LIME unique", says LIME Head of Department Sabine Koch
